History about the BNSF Aurora Sub.

  • Looking for any history on the old CB&Q Aurora Sub. Also looking for history about the Twin City Zephr. Anyone with any info would be greatly appreciated! The reason for my search is that I'm the president of the Prairie State Railroad Club in Big Rock IL and we are putting up a new web site and looking for some history on the Aurora Sub to be put into our "About Us" Page! We are a live steam club that runs along the BNSF for 1400 feet in Big Rock. If anyone is out rail fanning in the area please let me know as I live in Hinckley and only 50 feet from the tracks. Thanks in advance for any and all help! Rusty

I just have 1 suggestion, that you edit your origanal post's subject line to say "History or CB&Q's Aurora Sub" so people will know what you are looking for. Also, you might try the TRAINS MAg fourums, they're much more popular:

Just my My 2 cents [2c]

  • Back probably in the 80's Trains did an article on railfanning the sub in Hinsdale I think.  One of the editors had a friend who lived nexdt to the tracks and they wrote down every train that passed for 24 hours and published the list.
  •     I can remenber riding the orginal  Nebraska zepher 4 car set from Omaha to Chicago and later riding Amtraks Cailifornia Zepher and going from track to track to track as the dispatcher touted us around frights and commuter trains it was quite a rife    Larry

  • I live a couple blocks down from the tracks in Clarendon Hills, I also work at Dial Soap in Montgomery/Aurora and we have tracks coming into our plant from the BNSF lines and we get pairs of BN and sometimes SF locomotives (havent seen any with BNSF paint at work yet) coming in from aurora to pickup tank car's a few times a week
