Favorite EMD Locomotive

  • SD45 - For a number of reasons........it is truly a mean looking machine with the long frame and the flare radiators. It was modern enough that it got over the wheel slip problems (somewhat) of the earlier EMDs, but old enough you do not lose all your power when the computer crashes.

    Then there is just the horsepower appeal. It was the king for a number of years (the M636 did not sell sales records, so I don't count it too much) until the SD50 came out but that locomotive was trying to push way too much out of the 645 block.

    Plus it is a machine that you can still see somewhat often (rebuilt usually), so there is some appeal there. Just my opinion
  • I think the GP7/9 have to be some of the toughest locomotives ever built. Look at the number of these guys still in switching service today after 50+ years. And asthetically that high nose just gives it a tough-as-nails railroad look.

  • Definitely the GM10. I always liked getting that on the head end instead of a GG1 or E44. But if you insist on limiting me to a diesel it would be the SD45.

    For freight: SD45
    Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.
  • F7, in "ABBA" configuration. It beats the SD40-2 in "Tony Orlando and Dawn" configuration every time.
  • i voted "other" for the gp7. the first locomotive i rode the cab was erie lackawanna 1246.
    gp7's were the only power assigned to the "pburger" in the 70's, just before conrail

  • I always liked the SD40-2 and SD38-2. Nothin' meaner than these two doin' a hard pull. The sound is just awesome.

  • My favorite EMD locomotive is definetely the SD70M with the flared radiators, but in my opinion GE definetely has better locomotives overall and is a better manufacturer of locomotives especially the wide nose engines. I model the Norfolk Southern in HO scale
    and most of my locomotives are GE, although I do have a few EMD engines but I do not run them very often and when I do they are not on the point of the trains, the GE's are. I even have a couple of Conrail GE's with NS patches to look prototypical. Don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of Conrail at all, in fact I despise it, but the real NS still uses ex-Conrail power so I do also to keep up with the era that I model.

    NORFOLK SOUTHERN RULES!!!! Especially the "Horsehead" scheme.

  • I voted for the SD45, but i would have voted for the SD40 to. Because we all know that straight SD40's are better, or Dash 3's.

  • I gotta go with the SD40T-2 and SD45T-2. Love those tunnel motors.

  • How can you beat the E/F units? They will always be the classic american diesel locomotive.
  • Q: What do they call locomotives like the GP38 SD40 ex.. ex.. that have the cabs sticking out of the body of the train?

  • Where is the E5? Perhaps I am showing my age, but there are many who feel these were the most beautiful(if an engine can be beautiful) engines ever built.
