BN has ruined me and any chance at good railfanning i could've possibly had in this area

How did BN ruin a teenager that lives outside of their former territory ?

i guess they didnt. it was CNW being cheap. GAH

  • But wouldn't those two potash trains be powered by the SD50F and SD60F engines that you hate and don't want to see ?

no sir. CNW had the haulage rights with CN. not trackage rights. those trains came through with CNW SD50s and SD60s. the ones i LOVE to see. in fact, the potash trains that arrived in Itasca when CN drops them off, were usually pulled by DWP or CN SD40s

I dont think so! BN had a very colorfull fleet of loco's and they were a great railroad at least in my opinion. Just like any other road they did what they had to do to make money and stay alive!

  • i know, but they could've survived without those haulage rights

  • I got one question about that photo. Why do they have the tank car in the consist? I've seen a couple pics were there is a tank car in the loco consist, but didn't know why. Is it for extra fuel?
  • WCfan, the tankers were for extra fuel. Don't know much about it, but I do know that the BN tried some sort of program that included tank cars in the locomotive consists to help extend the number of trips and miles they could go between fueling stops. I don't think much ever came of it though, as they obviously aren't still used to day. Someone a little more informed could probably give you more details, but that's what I remember from an article in MR a number of years ago.

  • Yes, their primary role was to extend the range of locos through areas where fuel was either scarce or too expensive for BN to purchase along the way. They also helped the locos maintain adhesion due to the constant ballast weight of the fuel in the locos tanks. They were equipped with MU connections also at each end.

They were known as fuel tenders. Here's the link: http://www.mtnwestrail.com/wyoming/bnft.htm

  • That was really informing Ted thank you! I actually purchased a BN fuel tender from athearn and have been wondering what i could do with it!

  • I knew you would like that SD60M. By the way, what's your real name? what part of Memphis do you live in? I was in the Navy during the 80's and went to tech school in NAS/NTS Millington. I remember Silky Sullivan's ( I believe that was the name) and their diver down buckets. Those were the days.
