  • The very best train show I can think of is "Tracks Ahead", which comes on PBS. It's a half hour program about all aspects of real trains and model trains and each program has several different topics. I've been taping every episode. Unfortunately, a few months ago it was cancelled (it used to be every Saturday morning). That was PBS Detroit, so chances are it's on other PBS stations still. It's produced by Milwaukee Public Teleivision, but Detroit's the only PBS station I get. The website for the show is www.mptv.org/Trax_main.htm .

Another show is "Great Railway Journeys". This comes on a local station, so I'm not sure where you might find it. Each show is an hour long and focuses on one person's railway journey. Besides the trains, you also see the other things they do and learn a bit about the country they're travelling in. Many of the shows are very excellent and some are not so good. It depends on who the person travelling is, because they decide how it turns out. For the most part, the good ones outnumber the bad. Some of the people are railfans themselves. In one episode though, it's this annoying Russian woman who admits, "I know nosing about zee technical vorkings of trains."

We're still behind here in North America for trains on TV. Germany actually has an entire TV station devoted to trains (Bahn TV)! Why can't we have one, too?
  • There's also a model trains segment on DIY. I think it's on Sundays, but check satelite or
cable schedule. We also have Tracks Ahead on KET2 on Mondays at 5:30 p.m.

Also, sometimes on Discovery Channel or Travel Chanel, you can find shows on railroads.
