Clover Leaf

  •

I have been trying to find info on the Clover Leaf route.  I remember a railyard in Toledo as a child but i always thought it was the Nickel Plate Road. From what i remember the NKPR geeps were painted somewhat like Detroit and Toledo Shoreline in the 60s and 70s. Well if anyone has any info it would be helpful. Thank You!

  • The Clover Leaf was the nickname of the Toledo, St. Louis and Western, which was consolidated into the Nickel Plate (New York, Chicago and St. Louis) during 1923. It reached 448 miles from Toledo to East St. Louis, and it owned half of the Detroit & Toledo Shore Line.

In Ohio, NS operates about 5 miles south from Maumee, and perhaps some Toledo trackage as well. In Indiana, the Wabash Central has 26 miles from Craigville to Van Buren, and then NS has 10 miles from Van Buren to Marion (out of service?). The Central Railroad Co of Indianapolis has 25 miles from Marion to Kokomo, and then NS has 26 miles, Kokomo to Frankfort, perhaps operated by the CRCI. In Illinois, the Eastern Illinois RR has 53 miles from Metcalf to Neoga, while NS has 11 miles from the Coffeen power plant to Sorento. That would be 156 miles of 448.

  • I am also a fan of the Cloverleaf. The book "The Nickel Plate Story" by Roher has a chapter on it,public libraries might have it.The small book "Reflections,The Nickel Plate Years, Cloverleaf District" by Steven Grigg is also good.Up until the 1980's they used to run two trains a day thru my hometown of Decatur.
  •  Thank You for the help and the links!!
  • Part of the failed Grand Narrow Gage Trunk, connecting the Ohio Narrow Gage lines with the Cotton Belt. See George Hilton's book on the American Narrow Gage Experience which showed it before folding it into LE&W and then NKP.
