CN and NS are the only ones with deep enough pockets, since CSX has indicated NO interest whatsoever and the others can't scrape together more than a third of CP's asking price. NS already paid big bucks to upgrade the capacity between Binghampton and Albany/Mechanicsburg; however, NS does not want the Albany to Montreal Main, and NS already OWNS the Southern Tier that D & H has trackage rights on.
CN wants the WHOLE D & H and, even though CP really doesn't like the idea of selling to their Canadian competitor, unless a deeper-pocketed suiter comes around willing to buy the ENTIRE D & H, the CN will probably be the eventual winner/buyer with the proviso that NS gets trackage rights between Binghampton and the Albany/Mechanicsburg connection to/with Guilford. Shortly after this happens, look for CN to buy the Reading & Northern, and look for NS to buy Guilford with a possible proviso letting CN have trackage rights from the New Brunswick Southern in the north to the Boston area in the south, in order to preserve CN's new "Yankee Clipper" service from Halifax to Boston.
Best Wishes from Ross R. Moore, Jr.
