I live in Ohio and on a trip to the small town of Tiffin, OH tonight, I spotted a Central Kansas locomotive on the Northern Ohio & Western trackage (NOW is a shortline owned by Omnitrax). Does anyone know why this locomotive would happen to be this far away from home? Is Central Kansas owned by Omnitrax? If they are, does Omnitrax normally share out power to it's other roads?

Central Kansas is an Omnitrax owned railroad. A Central Kansas GP7 was assigned to UP's Canal Street terminal in Chicago for a while and has since been replaced by an Omnitrax GP38 and GP7. I believe that UP has contracted with Chicago Rail Link to switch this terminal.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Central of Kansas is no longer a carrier in Kansas. Most of the tracks they used are now served by the Kansas and Oklahoma. K&O is owned by SKOL and appears to be successful.

The GP7 you saw is staying in Tiffin. I live a few miles north of there and got to ride in the engine. It has a D*** LOUD HORN! The engine is actually a GP7M-2, only one like it, itself!

Omnitrax must have scattered the Central Kansas engines then. They also own a short line here in Colorado, the Great Western Railway of Colorado, and I have seen two CSR engines on that trackage (out towards Greeley, Colorado).

Central Kansas GP7 903 still turns up at Canal Street every now and again and also shows up at the IMX, which is visible from I-55 (Stevenson Expy). It appears to be part of a pool of Omnitrax locomotives which switch these terminals.

The CKRY was formed Jan 1, 1993 when the old Santa fe sold 900 miles of branch trackage in KS to the new shortline. A handful of old ATSF GP7/9 units were part of the sale. Also included was a large batch of ATSF grain hopppers that were stenciled w/CKRY reporting marks. On July 1, 2001 the CKRY was sold to the WATCO shortline group and the rr was renamed Kansas & Oklahoma. The former Santa Fe units are now off the property but the grain cars remain on what has become a very successful regional rr.
