BRC caboose disaster - pics and vido
Posted by jon grant on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 3:46 PM

I was really lucky to locate a photo of a BRC caboose which exactly matches the Proto 2000 caboose.

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/brc/brc-c240ash.jpg

No modifications were required, except for changing the trucks to the Tichy version, and P2K metal wheels - the P2K trucks with pickups to all wheels are far too valuable to be wasted on a caboose.

Therefore it was going to be a simple repaint of a WM red example and relettering.

The repaint went well but the individually applied lettering (Microscale Roman white) took on a life of their own.

Consequently, I totally ballsed-up the spacing between the words (COMPANY should really read CO.) and the words wander about like a meandering river.

Sod's Law also says I havent got enough letters left to correct it, so an extra-heavy (for me) weathering job has been applied to try and hide it a bit.

Lesson learned - use a flippin ruler next time.

Here's the pics

Of course I couldn't leave without shooting a video as well, to really rub it in.

The caboose looks great, and didn't you know that years of rain and snow can cause the lettering to slide? (I know it's lame, but it would probably work on the non-modeler. Wink [;)])

Jon,

That weathering is excellent!  Did you use the India Ink wash technique to achieve the effects?

Well Jon just say the carmen were drunk when they painted it or even better say a rookie carman painted it.

I wish my mistakes looked that good. Your a very humble guy my friend. I love your vids on you tube, you capture the gritty side of Chicago so well I feel like I am there.Anyhow keep upn the good work your an inspiration to my own modeling. BTW do you havea  track plan for Sweethome?

I think it makes it look even more prototypical because, as we all know, things in real life aren't perfect either. Good job, it really is a great looking piece.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Acrylic washes rather than ink. Same principle though.

I also brushed on some powdered chalk (European dirt) at the end.

Not yet, but I hope to have something to show in a few months. I never got round to learning how to use Cadrail - took up too much modelling time.
