Would any of you be interested in a tutorial on how to paint and decal an engine? I have just begun doing this and would like other people to give it a try. I know painting and decaling a engine seems hard, but it's really not.
Let me know if you would want to see one.

Smoke,
Don't worry about how many folks respond to this, just do the tutorial anyhow! Whether people want to read it or not, it's good to have this sort of "how-to" thread on the forum.
Yea, maybe you only help a handful of modelers now. So what. You've helped another modeler become better at his or her craft. It's tips and tricks like this that help to perpetuate and improve this beloved hobby of ours.
And, your thread may actually become even more beneficial to others down the road at some point. Look how many threads get resurrected after a long period of time because the need is there again.
Just a word of advice, Smoke: Try to balance your tutorial with good and descriptive pictures for clarity. Not too many though 'cause it will make loading the pages for us modem users a time-consuming event.
Hope that helps...
Tom

YES PLEASE! I model a freelanced line and have a mixed collection of locos, meaning they can't belong to a prototype and need repainting.

I won't be painting with tape. I will be painting the loco black and then decalling it. how do you get brush marks in your decal solution? Are you using Micor-Sol nad Micro-Set?
It look like you want to see it so the next loco I paint. Hopefully it will be a KAto Sd80MAC.
For real crisp parting lines you should try 3Ms Fineline tape. It is a vinyl tape that can be curved and conform to irregular surfaces. I burnish the edge and shape it over latches and door cracks to stop any creap under of the next paint. It is found at auto paint suppliers. It comes in various widths, 1/8,1/4 etc. I prefer the 1/4" and cut it narrower if needed. It is used for the exact same purpose only for 1:1. To not disturb the decal when using setting solution, you need to apply it just above the decal (surface slightly tilted) and let it flow accross the film. Once the decal has been treated you cannot touch it. Don't allow the setting solution to pool on the decal as it may cause distortion or even shriveling. Soak up excess from the surface, but don't touch the film. A couple of applications may be needed. I'll use Microsol first. If the film is somewhat stubborn then Walther's Solvaset (a stronger version) is used.

Yes please. I don't really plan on custom painting any undecorated locos, but I would like to super detail, and that will require painting and decaling. BTW, I've seen some of your work and it looks great!
