Althought I model the late 1990s, I got a couple of steamers that I can use as excursion power and such...

...Alright I got em because I thought they were absolutely beautiful and wanted some steam to play with haha.

My Roster:

Bachman Spectrum 4-8-2 USRA Heavy Mountain (undec)

Marklin Trix 2-8-2 USRA Light Mikado (NYC)

Both run great but the Marklin blows me away with it's smoothness, detail and pulling power.

Cheers!

My steamer roster is small, as well:

NYC

  • 0-8-0 (Proto 2000)
  • 2-8-2 (BLI)
  • 2-8-2 (Trix)

Erie

  • 0-8-0 (Proto 2000)

All my steamers are top-notch runners - especially the 0-8-0 and the 2-8-2 Trix.  I'm also looking forward to increasing my NYC roster by adding a BLI 4-8-2 Mohawk at a future date.

Chuck, being sort of new I never heard of a 2-10-10-2? Could you post a PIC of it?

Steamers that cause the lest problems are Bachmann GS-4's 4-8-4, no sound and DC only. One is a Daylight and other is a War Baby.

Best puller is my Class J 611 4-8-4 BLI with QSI sound.

Engine I like the best is a M1a 4-8-2 BLI with QSI.

Then there is the Hudson 4-6-4 BLI with QSI, it has issues. Sometime's it stick to the rails fine other times it derails if I look at it.

Next is my Monon Heavy Mike 2-8-2 #578 BLI with QSI. With small tender sound is a little weak and cannot pull like the other BLI's but I like Monon so it gets track time.

Finaly My Big Boy 4-8-8-4 #4009, should be my favorite and see's a lot of track time but it has many faults.  It is a Genesis with a MRC decoder, decoder has not died yet but has quricks. Sound turns it self off, changes whistles at will. But what I hate the most is the tender strings (tips) on a 18" turn with a modest load. I am talking 9 easy rolling rolling stock! I am sure the Class J will pull it around the bench.

Got my first steamer DEC 7th 2006, first BLI DEC 15th 2006.

Roundhouse RTR 4-4-0 It only knows how to take off and run at 30 mph with 5 pax cars. It does not switch well and sometimes trips on a switch frog. It's a keeper but I wont be buying any more of that crappy MRC stuff.

BLI

2-8-2 first run Heavy Mike Onery critter going through it's third annual oil/lube/filter. It is facing a left side rod or gear tower bind that is giving it a waddle.

2-10-4 J1 Class PRR A queen who cannot abide 24" radius track. It needs to be fed 32" to run well. The thing looms over the coaling tower making it look puny. I actually had to ditch that old AHM tower because the frigging tender is BIGGER than it. Ditto for the Duplex.

PRR Duplex 4-4-4-4 T1 Woe onto the Track that has a flaw in it. Either that or I need new glasses. Maybe that is what the problem is. The roundhouse I own cannot contain this rammer who only wants to take 100 cars to 120+ mph. None of that 20 mph stuff. I have to weigh it down with 12 Heavyweight pullmans and a hatful of head end cars to beat it down to a compliant engine.

Sadly it sits in a box waiting for the day I take it to the club. The home Im in is just too small for this engine. But I LOVE it! LOL.

Reading PCM T1 4-8-4 Workhorse. Reliable and a favorite. Maybe two will be good now that prices have come down.

QSI Proto 2-10-2 heavy Smooth operator. None of my engines in the past or in the future will ever start moving on one "Click" of my DT400 throttle.

QSI Proto Y3 2-8-8-2 Light on pulling, good for helper service which really is too bad for such a nice engine. But it's good manners allow it to be a keeper.

BLI M1a 4-8-2 Wheels run off, pulls like a draft horse uphill. It aint happy going downhill. Figure that one out.

I had a bunch of others but they got resold on Ebay to good homes. I know I forgot an engine or two somewhere in the stack of boxes.

I have about 3 more steamers planned plus two desiel orders pending for the next 24 months. Some of which I have waited on since they were announced TWO FREAKING YEARS AGO.

They were such poor performers Santa Fe wouldn't have anything to do with an articulated unit from then on.  Notice there are no Santa Fe Yellowstones, Challengers, or Big Boys.

I'm about 95% steam, mostly Rio Grande and Southern Pacific.  Mostly brass.  Too many to list without hogging space, but the wheel arrangements run the gamut from 2-8-0's clear up to 4-8-8-2 and 2-8-8-4's.  I'd say the biggest number of a particular wheel arrangement I have are 4-8-2's--6 in Rio Grande and 5 in SP.
