OK, I know I need Leds but what else? I know I need a dieo but what ratting? Plus I think there is a + side and - side of a led, one led is longer, which is which?
Engines I want to added LED's are old brown box PK 2000 BL 2's. There orginal dieos where DOA and have been removed. Also have a few old Athearn Blue boxes as well.
I have a few leds from Radio Shack that I bought for a driffrent reason, would they work?
Asking again Cuda Ken
I hate Rust
Ken,
If you are happy with the color and size of the LEDs you have on hand, use them. The longer lead is the anode, or the + side of the LED.
You are going to need 750 ohm to 1000 ohm resistors.
If you are not going to have directional lighting, then you will need only the LED and resistor.
If you want directional lighting, then it will require two resistors, and two diodes. The diodes #IN4004 .5A and the resistors you can get from Radio Shack.

(I also got 50 Surface mount LEDS ....about the size of a grain of sand.....for the same price....great for ditchlights) David

Surface mount the size of a grain of sand!! Would these be suitable for installation in classification lights on steam HO locos??
davidmbedard wrote:Yes, if the classification light is hollow.
I've often thought about drilling them out and installing the correct colored lenses. I think lit class lights and markers on cabooses realy set trains off and this may be an answer on how to do it. Also switch stand lanterns. Sorry, guess I got a little off topic here. Ken
Dave, do you have a link or sellers name. What was the key word search you used if you dont have a link or seller's name. I have never seen them at that kind of $ before.
Now the real dumb question, is the Trucks the + side or the chassis?
Thanks for all the answers, with your folks help there will be something bright around my bench.

Looking down on top of the loco, front facing away from you, the right side is the + side.
