Assembly/Disassembly for locos
Posted by AltoonaRailroader on Monday, March 12, 2007 10:14 AM

Hello,

I recently bought a used Conrail GP40-2 #3297 at a swap meet and of course it came with no box, or instructions or anything. So before I try to "TRY" to take it apart for my own maintenance I wanted to know if there is anywhere I can get these diagrams from the internet. I'd even go as far as going to the manufacturer to order it if I knew who made it.

It seems to be a very good locomotive, it runs well and is in pretty good shape. Although I have some pretty tight turns on my small layout my other loco's run good but this one keeps jumping randomly on a two corners specifically.

Can anyone help?

It might help if you indicated the loco's manufacturer and scale.  Not many of us are mind readers.

Well, it's HO, but you'll have to use your mind reading skills on the manufacturer, I'll have to take a closer look at it. Is there anything I should look for to determine the manu? Sorry, I'm new this game.

If there's no name anywhere on the bottom, it could be from one of several manufacturers.

Try spreading the sides of the top shell away from the frame, and see if it can be worked loose that way.

Some things to look for are the manufacturer's name on the bottom of the fuel tank or trucks. If it's an Atlas, it will have the name on the trucks. If it's Athearn, there will be no name, but there will be four holes in the bottom of the fuel tank. A Bachmann will have the name on the fuel tank. Besides those three, I can't think of anyone else who's made a non-brass GP40.

Thanks Darth, now that you mention it, there are four small rectangular holes on the bottom of the fuel tank that look like they have little clip tabs inside,  it looks like this is where you would start to take it apart at, but I didn't want to try forcing those clips without being sure first.

Wonderful. Thank you so much. I'm 99% sure it's the Athearn model because the tank is one big piece underneath, not just part of the side.
