I grew up in, and still spend much time in, Linden, New Jersey. On the old PRR mainline, now Amtrak and NJ Transit Northeast Corridor, and Conrail Chemical Coast Secondary. Very small yard here with one GP38-2, a caboose, and a SnoJet type ice melting machine.

I then spent 12 years in Scotch Plains, NJ. From my house I could see the old Lehigh Valley tracks that Conrail turned into the mainline going into Oak Island, Newark NJ yard. Many "Big Blue" trains everyday, with a passing siding to boot!

I now live in the hills of northwest NJ, which were criscrossed by a few, small mining railroads that brought iron ore and zinc down to.....first, the Morris Canal......and later, to the CNJ. The remains of a few furnaces/forges are in the woods around here. This is where George Washington got his cannon balls. The last mine closed in 1959, even though much ore remains and the vein is right at the surface. Conrail drills a few small industries here once a week or so.

I live in the country near Crosby, Texas - 40 minutes East of Houston, 10 minutes west of Dayton, Texas and 15 minutes north of Baytown, Texas..right in the middle of the San Augustine grass farms...HWY 90 is close by and I can catch an occasional glimpse of shared BNSF and U.P. trains on the old S.P. line into Houston...

Milwaukee area - home of Walthers and (almost) Kalmbach. All pay homage to Leon's (27th & OK), the real "Arnold's" from Happy Days; home of Miller Beer (blech!), Sprecher's (Yeah!)

Hi David
occasionally I see SOO line freight cars on the CP Rail tracks here in BC, I am forever fascinated by the trains, especially those that seem far away from home

cheers, krump

I found the replies quite interesting. I live in Neenah Wisconsin, located between Packerland and Brew town. I live 1 and 1/4 miles from a railroad yard known from my child hood as Soo Line and was Wisconsin Central, Now being served by Canadian National. The Fox river valley as it is called is the second largest industrial hub in the state, whose prime products is the failing paper industry. During my childhood CNW, and Milwaukee Road also serviced this town. My two favorite train cars a Soo Line Box Car and a Soo Line Caboose.

Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico. On the Gulf Coast, about 500 miles south of the U.S./Mexico border. Nearest operational trains are about 120 miles north in Tampico. Years ago (pre-1960) there were a couple of small narrow gauge lines in the area, primarily industrial in nature) that served the local oil industry. Unfortunately no traces remain today.

in Biasca, southern Switzerland, along the Gottard railroad (the one featured in one of the last Trains magazines).

A very spoiling place for trainspotting: over 40 passenger trains a day (Swiss, german and italian ones), and twice as much freight trains.

haven't moved from page 2. ever heard of Salmon Arm, BC ?
- on a map, find Vancouver BC, Calgary Alberta, and Spokane Washington - now find the intersection between all three (close enough...)

cheers, krump

I live in Greenfield, IN, just about 15 miles west of Indianapolis, though hopefully soon that address will be changing to a Florida or North Carolina address! [:)] Greenfield is located on the old Pennsylvania line that ran from Indy to Dayton (and on to Columbus?)
I grew up watching Penn Central, and later Conrail (before they abandoned the line) trains on the line.

I live in the Southern Tier of NY in the Greater??? Binghamton area.
I watch trains (3 RRs) and also watch the local economy die.

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

Grew up in the Adirondacks of New York, but currently live in Spring Lake, NC. Aprroximately 8 miles North of Ft. Bragg, the home of the 82nd Airborne Division, and unless you've been living in another dimension the past year or so, that name should sound familiar.

Katy, TX. Just to the west of Houston. The old mainline of the MKT into Houston. Now UP but it ends here, does not go into Houston anymore due to freeway expansion. Now just get the sand/gravel deliveries to the local industry. I sit outside and listen to the switching all the time. Too many trees between me and the tracks. Odd thing is I model B&O and am not anywheres near where it ran.

I missed this one too. Northwest of Kansas City and due east of St.Joseph- right along the old Hannibal & St.Joe(CB&Q) main. Used to have a Sante Fe branchline, C&NW (former Rock Island), and Milwaukee Road mainlines within a 20 mile radius. U.P. of course has the C&NW and SOO (now CN?) owns former Milwaukee Road. Sante Fe pulled up rails about the same time BN scrapped trackage from St.Joe to Brookfield Missouri.

Modular railroading at its best!
If it has an X in it, it sucks! And yes, I just had my modeler's license renewed last week!

In the Corn Belt.

(or does anyone outside of the Midwest even know where the "Corn Belt" is, besides hearing it in the CGW's slogan?)[:D][;)]
