Scratch Built Progress I
Posted by conrail92 on Thursday, February 8, 2007 8:10 PM

Ok well as you may or may not remember about 3-4 months ago i was questioning a few things about scratch building well 3-4 months later i made some progress on my first every scratch built item i ever made in my life :) so i feel this is a large acomplishment. Now im scratch building the NS alto tower in in Altoona Pa. Its being built in HO scale.

Now what i accomplished so far doesnt seem like much but its almost 40% done ! ITs the Front And Rear wall. Whats left too do is make the right and left wall. And the roof and then paint and detail, the part im most worried about is the roof not sure how i am going about that. Note i only put a couple days of progress into it because i go back too it off in on.

What im Building

What mine looks like.

Front and Back

Now its not much but be patient and keep in mind this is my first ever scratch build.

Give me your comments and thoughts.

Great Start

If i were doing it i would make a sample roof out of paper since the roof looks alittle complex

once i had a passable paper roof then i'd try the real thing

It looks like you have a good start on the project. It is very satisfying to see the results start to come together.

A couple of questions and observations.

What are your plans for the windows?  Are you going to scratch build them, or are you going to use commercially available plastic ones?  From the photos it looks very much as if the windows have been changed over time.  The newer looking photo the front ones are now larger double hung windows.

I am curious about your choice of strip-wood for the construction.  First off I admire your effort to go for a board-by-board technique for your first project.  I sure have not plucked up the courage to do that.  It seems to me as if the lumber may be over sized for the effect you are looking for.  What are your plans for finishing the exterior to get the different siding looks that the structure has?

Keep up the good work and let us see updates as you complete the project.

A good start always helps when scratch building. I think it looks pretty good so far. Keep us posted.
