Question about DCC and LifeLike Loco GP-38 Hi-Nose
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 11:27 PM
I am just beginning in the hobby, I bought a Life Like train set for myself. Does the Life-Like GP38 support DCC?

No. But like any other locomotive, it can be modified.

If you are a beginner you might just want to purchase a DCC ready or DCC equiped locomotive. DCC ready means the loco is equiped with a DCC plug to to plug a DCC decoder into. DCC equiped means the loco already has a DCC decoder inside therefore one wouldn't need to be purchased. Either type can be purchased beginning in the $60 range with a little searching. Of course you will have to purchase a DCC system to go with a DCC equiped loco and these start at around $100. If you plan on using the equipment that came with your train set it would save you much money but you would sacrifice quality and realism. I would suggest sticking with your present train set and maybe purchasing an regular DC powered unit by Athearn. These units run for around $25 and would be much more reliable than the locomotive that can with train set. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions!
