Morning.
Yesterday I was in Portland. Working on the railroad.
I got up at 7am, then my mom and I drove down to Portland, were I was able to catch the first train out to the worksite. Me and 5 other volinteers jacked up the track using a rail jack, replaced rotten ties, laying new ballast, tamping ballast, drank coffee, ate dounts, and drove spikes into predrilled holes. My back, arms, hands, and neck are still cramped from shoveling, raking, tamping, lifting, and spiking.
Scott- if you ever do anyhting like this it's hard work but it's fun work.

...and talk about timely - after I'd written about the Rams' (non-?)performance this weekend, a friend of mine in St. Louis sent this along:
In light of all the threats in the news these days, I thought you should know about the latest one... St Louis Rams football practice was delayed nearly 2 hours after aplayer reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on thepractice field.Head coach Scott Linehan immediately suspended practice while St Louisand federal investigators were called to investigate.
After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that thewhite substance unknown to the players was the goal line.Practice was resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikelyto encounter the substance again.
Okay, I'm heading out for the night this time - see you!

Uh oh! Dick said his train ride was disrupted by a derailment in BC. That's bad news. He missed the leg if the rail trip from Kamloops to Vancouver. I wonder about the pariculars of the derailment. CN and CP tracks are on opposing sides of the river all the way. I would think they could stay on only one side, but what do I know. The part between Calgary and Kamploops is quite spectacular crossing over the divide, etc. But still, who wants to ride on a bus instead of a train?
Looking forward to his pictures.
It was kind of a down day at church. The pastor just had his last day there. he's the one who helped us through the sad time with Shelley losing her sister, and we felt like he was "family".

Evening, Flo, I see most of the crew is gone for the night. Just a cup of hot apple cider, please. Thanks!
Didn't get all the cleaning done that I'd hoped to finish this afternoon. I did get some straightening done, and got a week or two of cash entries put into Quicken. I need that to have an accurate idea of what I need to base the spending plan on, for the rest of the year. Had the deck door open and the windows until after dinner this evening, it was so nice out. Think I need a few boxes to put all the kits I still have yet to assemble (until I get time enough to resume work on them).
I also was looking at one book I bought yesterday, which included in it the Alkali Central layout (anyone else remember that one?). I was trying to figure how to unwrap some of the elements of the layout into additional sections for my layout (i.e., into shelf or around-the-walls arrangement). Think I'll have to study that a bit and maybe get some color copies made to fiddle around with.
Also, after lunch I went over to one of my single friend's house and installed a memory chip in their computer. They have a flat-panel iMac that only had 256MB of memory, so I took one of the 256MB chips that I had and installed it in the iMac. I used another chip I had from my laptp to add in. So now, they have 512MB in theirs and I still have 640MB in my laptop (once I get it back up and running). My PowerMac I got from my brother several months back uses different type of chips, and has 1.25GB of memory in it. Okay, enough geek-talk...
I need to find some lettering decals for my Walthers city water tank. The letters that come with it are too big and blocky for my tastes. I do like the tank, though.
Paul, that sounded like a really neat formation flying by your place. I'm not sure I've ever seen a Thunderbolt in anything other than photos.
And for you Red Sox fans, it looks like they are back on track to the World Series. The St. Louis Rams didn't do well today at all - 33 to 6? C'mon, guys!
Time for me to head for home. See you in the morning!
Blessings and Prayers,

That's nothing. Dad and I want to do a train of thought. You know, a Dome Car named Desire, The Joy Observation. And when she derials, it'll be a trainwreck of emotion...
Don't ask about my idea of a "pool" car. It involves A Superliner an 6000 gallons of water...
Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all night. Try the Veal.

Hey, I gots a problem. I've fallen in love with SP's Kraus Maffei. Teh only maker that I know of is AHM, of which I own. It doesn't move. at all. I wanna revamp it. I've never revamped an engine before. Ever.
Here's what I'm currently working on.
It's an Athearn GP50 that's being painted for my fictional road, the Midland Gulf Railway (MGRy). It's numbered 471
Good evening, just got back from two trips, Canadian Rockies from Calgary to Banff to Lake Louise, Columbia Ice Glacier, Train from Banff to Kamloops, then a derailment postponed the rest of the train trip to Vancouver, we had to take the tour bus Many derailments in BC apparently, the Government is really getting upset with CP and CN.
Then we were home for one day, October 11th, then off to New Hampshires White Mountains for a week. Got to visit one of my favorite LHS in Intervale, NH, took some train pics of the CSRR GP7 on it's way to Bartlett.
Will post some pics of Rockies and shots from the train as soon as I catch up with work around the ranch.

Yeah, I forgot that it goes to my work Email. I had to VPN in to get it. I sent you a return (my work Email address).
Oh, and Chloe, I'll have the Maine Lobster feast! And make sure that goes on Rob's tab, OK?
Der ...... Thanks for photos of really old locomotives. I recall seeing Stephanson's "the Rocket" (the yellow one) in British Ry Museum. There are some ancient engines in B&O mueseum I've seen and other ancient engines in British RY Museum.
To those thankful for the country ham......You're welcome. Answering questions on weathering the reefers, it's acrylic paints.
Blue sky here and nice temperatures. Kyaking weather here.
Oh oh! Jim's cleaning. Watch out!
have fun everybody!
***Jim, thanks for the correction on Chuckwagon...(chugwagon...I must have had the chug-chug of a steam loco on the brain)
Off to put up yet another couple sections of gutters somewhere. We have a most encouraging forcast here:
Tomorrow - tomorrow night: Precip 80% (rainfall may reach 1"...YEE HAW)
Tues: 60%, Wed 40%, Thur 40% Rob
Good afternoon, Janie - I'll have one of Rob's Chuckwagon specials and a cappacino, please. Thanks, Rob!
DerJohn, thanks for posting the pictures of the 'oldies but goodies'... Sometimes we forget how primitive the stuff before our time was.
Flashwave, looks like you had a good haul from that show, too! I look at the shows as partly a chance to find stuff that isn't readily available, or hunting for bargains.
Rob, sounds like you had a beautiful night/morning there. Over my way (in town), seeing the stars would be difficult unless I drove a mile or two outside of town. I probably could hear a train horns, depending on the time of their runs (down by the river wall). Not too sure about hearing a burro bray, though...
Lovely day here, 'only' 77 F (25 C) and fairly low humidity (about 45 percent). Tomorrow we're supposed to have some of that rain before it heads over Jerry's and Mike's way, then clear off again.
I'm going to be doing some straightening and cleaning (and tossing) today around the apartment. My friend in Memphis (for those who remember, the one I went down and visited couple of summers ago) will be coming up to visit between Christmas and New Year's. I figure that gives me enough time to straighten up the place, toss out all the stuff that's needed it for a couple or three years... right?
Speaking of which, I guess I better get started on that cleaning/straightening/clearing out...
Hope everyone's having as nice of weather as we're having here this afternoon, and getting some MRR'ing in. Prayers for those in need of comfort, healing, and uplifting.
Blessings,
Looks like I'm buying. Free Chugwagon style food is The Special the rest of the day and your choice of Columbian or Verona coffees as well as double shot Capachino and Espresso for those in need of a boost. Yea, I kinda like coffee.
Rob
refill, please & thanks.
Below is a photo I snapped out a window while in Africa. Have no idea what the locos are, just thought I would share the photo. Have been sorting some of my safari photos from years ago. Couldn't tell you any details, as I took that trip within two weeks of my mother's passing and was in a fog the entire trip. Was just what I needed at the time though.
***der, loved those photos of the oldies steaming away. Wish they would come out with a John Bull in N scale. Now THAT would be cool. I'll bet Atlas could pull it off, judging from their little 2-6-0 mogul.
PC: Ooops! My bad! I saw the differences as soon as I had posted. The DeWitt was at the Steam Expo, It may have been this. (Sorry about the focus, it's like UFO photography. The one you really want to see detail on is blurry.)
It certainly isn't any of these:

For christmas:A model Power Amtrak ICE. Runs good. 69
Circus cars for dad. set of 3, 45
Roundhouse Bicentenial Combine kit. (Cause I just LOOOOOOVVVVVEEEE Roundhouse's kits... ) 15
skipped a number of Cab forwards. Nice, but not waht I wanted or could afford. Some Daylight stuff, and a few SP engines that looked good. I need to get a layout up...
OHH Yeah. ANd I saw John Bull coaches for HO.
Morning all! I'll have a medium JR Regular please Zoe, and a slice of that banana bran loaf with a bit of butter, thanks.
PC:
No....I was thinking more like this....
in a Union Pacific mug, please & thank you!
Last night (2:00am) I went outside and watched some of the Orionid meteor shower. Adding to the atmosphere were the distant train horns blasting as they rumbled through Fairmount. And as an added bonus, Little Art (our mini jack donkey) let out one of his textbook super brays which echoed around the valley.
Below is something I picked up last night for $5.50 (plus another $5.25 for shipping). I no nothing about these (ENDO N gauge Rail Set #0101 & TOMIX 91011 Rail Set A)? I figure the Tomix red-colored track could be used for a nice N-scale kiddie-ride on the wife's HO scale layout. I'll pick out an old loco and some open gondolas, add seats and HO people for the right effect.
Not much else to report on. Rob

Evening Gang: We had a good time at the reunion dinner. All the members bio's were read and then the person was asked to say a few words. Mary Ann didn't want to say anything so the MC asked me to say something. Well I did and I should be healed up in a couple of weeks. Actually I just told everyone how much I love her and how great she has been. I imbarressed the her I guess.
PC: It sounds like you didall right at the show.
Der: The layout is coming right along.
Well I'd better get my blanket and head for the barn. I will be sleeping out there for a couple of nights.
Evening, Janie. I'll just have a cup of decaf for now. Now tomorrow for lunch, I might be getting another of those fine ham & cheese sandwiches...

Hey, hey, hey, Garry! I resemble that remark!
Nice photos, by the way...
A quick drop by before bed.
It rained a little later than we were told it would, but it has been a good rain. Made some progress on the scenery despite the afternoon being taken up with a (ooops I forgot about this when planning my weekend) male voice choir concert and dinner over to Spry Bay. Any how, I’m now out of sifted sawdust, so have had to stop until I can sieve some more. Here’s what the tunnel mouth looks like this evening. The plastic bits sticking up, and along the wall are to keep a gap between the wet sawdust/glue mix and an access hatch, on the one hand, and the wall on the other.
Garry: Bring on the country ham, 50 tons should hold us for breakfast at least! http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g84/JimRCGMO/CS%20n%20Other/HamSandwich.jpg
Mike:
We've got 2 x-SIL that's lucky to still be breathing.
all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.
Evening folks-been mellowing with some suds before zzz (yeah I know I should be at the beer barn but no worries-didn't bring it in with me-just dropped in to listen to convo-I'm the inconspicuous fella in the back booth jamming on classic country on his Ipod & playing "air 5 string banjo" )
Phillip-no worries-I've had more of those "D'OH" moments than most here!
I had a day of chores (laundry, grocery shopping) so didn't get to hit the train workbench today-hopefully tomorrow, & get started on my bare bones display track for my model displays.
The subject of storage around layouts came up in recent thread, which I found interesting, since I've been wondering where to put stuff as we settle in here. While I was at Wally World today, I snagged one of those Sterlite storage bins with little casters on each end to empty my dresser of junk I've accumulated over the years & slip under the bed. They work VERY well! & also the lids have notches molded in to make them stackable. About $13 a pop, but I'm surprised at how much can go into them. They're about 3' long, 1-1/2' wide, & about 6" deep (more or less) So anyways, I'm gonna go with them-They seem that they should hold a good # of train cars & locos too? (shrugs)
Well I better git-Logan & Magick (the doggies) are giving me expectant looks (W-A-L-K) so I better go make their evening. Nite all!
AH HA!
(couldn't resist) Rob
