Illiterate ebay seller...
Posted by Tracklayer on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 1:27 PM
Hello all. Hope everyone made it through Christmas okay. I woke up the other morning and checked my e-mail to find that I had been reported to ebay by a seller for not sending him payment for a piece of rolling stock that I agreed to purchase from him a couple of weeks ago... He doesn't have a PayPal account, so he only accepts money orders or bank cashiers checks as payment only. I've written him several times since then requesting his address without any response. Now today I finally get a reply from one of his family members apologizing to me for all the trouble, and explaining to me that this guy (the seller) is functionally illiterate and doesn't read or write... If he doesn't read or write he has no business trying to sell things on ebay!. Apparently someone helped him set it all up then walked away. I can't believe that... Tracklayer

I don't mind seeing posts in regards to other folks eBay adventures. Sometimes it gives me a heads up of new stuff to look out for on eBay. It seems a lot of folks on this forum either use or have used eBay.

As long as the person has DEPENDABLE help then why not? In YOUR case it sounds like he lacks that help.Sad [:(]

A question does come to mind..IF he can not read nor write maybe he has "promise help" that is short on "helping" and long on promising but,on the other hand if this person turn you in for none pay then there is a error some where.Confused [%-)]

If he's so illiterate, how is it that he was able to navigate around on ebay and report me for nonpayment ?... One would have to do a bit of reading in order to do so would they not ?. I'm sorry, but I have no patients with people that can't read or write now a days, especially anyone over the age of 18... I work with a fifty five year old woman that is constantly asking me how to spell things. I finally bought her a elementary school level dictionary and told her that she was on her own from here on out!. It's a sad fact that if it weren't for Spell Check on our computers, a lot of people out there would be in trouble - and I'm talking about people with college degrees... I see people here on the forum making a statement like "me to", when it should be "me too". Or they'll say "thay did" when it should be "they did"... We've had this issue come up before here on the forum, and there's always those that will say as long as they can understand what the other person is saying that that's all that matters, or there will be some joker that will do their entire reply using all misspelled words just for spite. Oh well. Right is right and stupid is stupid and that's just the way it is... Tracklayer

Tracklayer,

Sorry to read about your situation.

Did he leave you any "Feedback"?

No Antonio. I haven't left any feedback yet, nor has he. I won't until after the matter is settled and I know for certain who and what I'm really dealing with. Tracklayer

Unless he has a medical degree, it's probably a good thing he has no patients.

<Moan>...

WARNING:  Venting to follow!!!

1.  I probably see 3-6 egregiously flawed eBay listings per week; things as bad as the wrong road name, the wrong manufacturer, the wrong scale, etc.  I've also had a few eBay transactions go less than smoothly.  BUT, I don't burden everyone here with each mistake I find in an ad or each e-mail I trade with a potential seller.

2.  If one is going to call someone out on his/her English skills, that member ought to be able to spell and or use proper grammar him/herself.

3.  Most people understand that eBay is a murky place.

I'll get down off my own high horse now.

I have found some great bargains on eBay on brass and OOP items. I just got an Atlas Silver Series SD24 (Santa Fe) for $56.

Wow.....just wow.......

No one on these forums wants to hear about you getting ripped off on e bay.......in fact we are all laughing AT you......you got taken and you will never learn.   Do your RESEARCH on the SELLER before you BID on an E BAY ITEM.  Do you understand that?  That is Ebay 101.....the first thing you learn when you buy from ebay.

If the seller is a retard, then that makes you a retard for buying from him.

Understand?  If not, Ill use smaller words next time.  Ebay threads really dont belong on these forums.....IMHO

 David

personally i don't mind seeing ebay threads here , since i can always choose to read them or not , and i've learned a bit about buying and selling on ebay from reading things here . what i don't like seeing is members insulting each other , so could you both tone it down please ?

How dare you share your ebay story with us!!!  And exactly how is attempting to buy a train car off of ebay even remotely related to the trains.com forum???  Oh, the horror!!!

And you are a "retard" for buying it, especially since your original post said nothing about actually sending money.  If you were a true ebay-er you would be able to spot an illiterate-retard ebay seller a mile away!

That a significant number of eBay sellers are illiterate, surly, and entirely incapable of focusing a digital camera is pretty much a given. At the same time I'm not particularly averse to hearing individual gripes or experiences...

Davidmberdard. If you had read in my original posting, you might have noticed that I said I attempted to contact the seller several times asking for his mailing address so that I could send him a money order for the car I agreed to purchase from him, but got no reply. The next thing I know I got a nonpayment notice from ebay. When I finally did get a reply from the seller it was one of his relatives explaining to me that the guy couldn't read or write and that was the reason he didn't answer my e-mails. I then went on to ask in response to another member's reply that I couldn't help but wonder how the guy managed to navigate on his computer enough to turn me in to ebay for nonpayment if he was so illiterate... The guy had perfect feedback and a professional looking listing, so there was no way of knowing it would turn out to be a sour deal. As for not liking members posting about their bad experiences on ebay. Sorry, but that's something none of you will ever stop no matter how nasty you get or how much you complain. Regards, Tracklayer

First of all, this forum doesn't belong to "us", it belongs to everyone. Secondly, it was related to trains. If you have that much of a problem with it I suggest you contact Bergie the forum moderator and report it to him. Thirdly, if you actually read my original posting you would have understood that I did attempt to contact the seller several times requesting his address but got no reply until I got the nonpayment notice from ebay. Finally, a friendly word of advice to you. You should refrain from calling members names. It can get your membership deleted... Tracklayer

It should be... It sure is frustrating to deal with someone that can't answer your questions about the item they have listed or about payment matters because they can't read your e-mails. Tracklayer

Well since you mentioned it,  I had a very good experience recently.  I was able to purchase two Atlas 8-40B Gold Norfolk Southern's that were not available in the hobby shops any longer (older run).  Both were brand new, still in the box, and I got them for around $155 each.  I did check the feedback on the seller first and they did take PayPal.  I won't do business on E-Bay without both of those.  Also many merchants post on E-bay.  I buy very little off E-Bay and when I run across a merchant I drop out to their website and try to go direct whenever I can.  Also if I ever wanted to part with any of my model railroad stuff, I'd likely post it on E-bay because I haven't see any viable model railroad swap websites.

Sheesh, talk about a tempest in a teacup!
The original post was a rant but it was train related and ment as a heads up to others here that do a lot of business on Ebay.
Ebay of late has been a mousetrap, if one is carefull deals still exist, but the days of bargains are getting shorter, crowded out by Ebay Store sellers listing items at or above list prices avalable at other online retailers.
I got burned earlier this year by a seller who took my money order (not a lot luckily) then dissappeared from ebay, then came back, then dissappeared again. I waited thru 3 months of one-way emails to the seller with no replies before I posted a Negative feedback (1st time ever), and shortly thereafter recieved an oddly worded email boilerplate letter from Ebay that gave me the impression that they really really dont like users leaving negative feedbacks no matter how screwed you get, even thought they didnt bother asking why I left it.
Ebay exists only to collect fees, I am convinced that you are completely unsupported (or marginally so at best) if anything goes wrong.
I'm waiting one more delivery, we'll see. I'm seriously using it less and less, as its just not worth it anymore.

   Have fun with your trains

You are protected by Paypal, BUT only if you report it within 45 days. I found out the hard way about this.  I ordered an item that was to be custom made, took longer than 45 days to make, and was never delivered.  Paypal said I was SOL, but fortunately most of the money was on my credit card and not out of my paypal account.  (Mastercard refunded me immediately, but I did lose about 50 bucks out of my paypal account).

So if you ever do get in a shady ebay deal using paypal, expedite your claim!

Okay son, I'm relaxed. And I apologize for jumping to conclusions. Thank you for your support. I don't think the other members even took the time to read the topic or replies, but rather just saw "ebay" and jumped in and started giving me harsh words. I've only been burned once on ebay and that was about two years ago for a $15.00 DVD I bought from a seller that eventually got busted for taking in over $50,000.00 and not sending the buyers their items. At the time I bought the video he had perfect feedback, but as the weeks went by while I waited for my movie, his negative feedback climbed more and more each day. I finally realized that I was never going to see my DVD or my money refunded so I wrote him and told him that I hoped he choked on my $15.00!. I then reported him to ebay and left a negative strike for him - not that it did any good... Tracklayer
