Christmas Decorations Box - 1 ---- New River Mine Kit with custom minehead structure - 0

This was not a good day.  A small box of decorations fell off the storage shelf and landed on the layout.

I see an opportunity.  I can now more easily install the internal lighting that I was planning and maybe even some sound generator to give the scene some action.

I knew there was a reason not to build valuable storage space above the layout!

Where are the police, the ambulances, the fire department, the engineers in hard hats scratching their heads, the insurance adjusters sitting on a nearby curb with their heads in their hands,...?

I think you staged this.  Evil [}:)]

Hmmmm  mining sounds.   I think you are on to something there.  We could use that for our club layout.  What do you have in mind as a source of sound for your mine?

I have been toying with the idea of the Dreamplayer module.  http://litchfieldstation.com/xcart/product.php?productid=280002&cat=156&page=1

My feeling is that it is likely that the sounds that would be heard up by the mine head and tippple would be more along the lines of heavy industrial.  I was thinking that with the Dreamplayer I could have generic sounds running and then trigger the sound of coal dumping from the tipple activated by a detector as the hoppers are moved under the tipple.

There are several sounds that are distinctive to a crusher which you might explore:

  • A continuous 'Cheerios(r) falling into a tin bowl' rattle where the main feed conveyor empties into the feeder bin.
  • A continuous but varying crunching - the main crusher at work.
  • A steady, low-level rattling as the coal makes its way through the sorters.
  • a somewhat louder rattle as material (coal or slate) falls from a conveyor into a holding bin.

All in addition to the usual hum and gear noises of electrical-powered machinery.

Fun, isn't it?
