I would prefer to ride in a locomotive cab for a day on a class one track, too. Only problem is that there are no steam locomotives on which I could ride, correct? Therefore I would take the tour of a model producing factory.

Train ride for sure.
I have had the luxury of a ride in a cab once in a shunting yard for a couple of hours. I would have been about 8 in the late 60's.

It's no contest--cab ride. After spending a year working as a train dispatcher and having to ride the cabs to become terrirtory-qualified there is nothing like being in the cab. I worked for a transit rr and the division I was on had approximately 30 miles of running with station stops every couple of miles. Then it was another 50 or so miles of rural running with only 5 or 6 stops. It definitely has changed my perspective and has given me a much greater respect for the power of trains.

Being a former roundhouse worker and conductor on the Soo Line, I will opt for the factory tour. Had more than my share of "cab" rides in my life, and then some.

I ran two engines with five box cars for twenty miles one time, what do you think I would do.

No doubt about it, I'ld much rather be the co-pilot on a 767 than go on the tour or ride in the locomotive.

The cab ride for me. While I'm sure the factory tour would be interesting, but I'm in this hobby because I love trains. My biggest thrill was riding the cab in steam engine for an hour on a Southern steam excursion 25 years ago. I'm ready to go again.
Enjoy

Hell Yes! Cab ride would come first! Now if it could only be steam! I have been lucky enough to have been in the cab of NKP 765, a narrow gauge shay, and a 2' steamer. No! I was incorrect! I was in the cab of a standard gauge shay, and a broad gauge 765!

Unfair question. What railroad modeler would not want to ride in a real engine, steam or diesel??? It has to be the ultimate perspective to running your trains.

I recently helped a local narrow gage museum lay real track. It was backbeaking and some of the hardest work I've done in my life! The only thing better would be riding in their steam loco (when rebuilt in a few years.)
A cab ride on in a Class 1 would be second. A factory tour would be the last thing on my list.

A cab ride over Donners Pass, Cajon Pass or Tehachapi Pass would be greatly accepted. At least one of the three. In fact any cab ride would be a great experience.

A difficult choice.
Locomotive: Hot, noisy, uncomfortable, nice view.
Plant: Hot, noisy, smells like chemicals, no view.
I'll go for an Amtrak observation car and a Martini

Frankly, this is almost a no-brainer. A cab ride on the prototype would bring a whole new perspective to the scale model.

I would just love to ride in the cab of a Big Boy, but know it can't happen. so i would settle for a ride on any big line.

I have taken quite a few rides on quite a few railroads. My two cab rides were exceptional. I got to "drive" a Shay at a tourist RR and a B23-7 on the high iron (under very close supervision). I'd like to do that again...maybe a SD90-43, or a dash 8...actually, anything would be great. Ride the train!

I've been in the cab for a short trip, and strapped my camcorder to the short-hood grab iron for essentially another. On a Class 1 with lots of traffic, I would expect to sit in the hole for hours on end and get to ride just a bit. I would prefer to see how the models are designed and built to accurately represent the real thing. Getting the detail accurately in miniature is pretty impressive. I'll build a camera into my own engine so that I get the feel of continuous running! Mark
