Tha Whistle Stop
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, November 11, 2006 4:02 PM

Well after some time my old Thread was getting just that OLD! So here we are,  good bye to some times I feel..

Consider this a place to chat about anything.

Sue (I know you'll be stopping in) I'm gad to hear that Larry got your roof fixed.

My train layout is on hold for the winter, I'm afraid my shed is much  to cold to work in, my Engines have found a home in my china cabinet. My Chirstmas train is all set up and at least I can run my engines on that. I t doesn't satisfy as much but it's something.

I hope to meet lots of new people and feel free to tell about who you are and what you model, hopefully we'll be able to help each other out with our favoite hobby.

No offense, but we already have two chat places such as this, (BEER BARN, COFFEE SHOP) and even with two its kinda hard to keep up. SO you may want to rethink this idea and then maybe join us in the Coffee Shop and Beer Barn?

Lisa,  We have been here since mid August.  It seems odd that this would be the first negative response, after you make the decision to change the name of your thread.

Your china cabinet sounds like a quality display case.

Is your family still going to the Wilmington show on the 18-19?  We are attending the Puyullap show that weekend.  We are always looking for more NP coal hoppers.

Back to my machine shop,

Sue

I am a US army veteran, permanently disabled due to diabetes complications and spinal meningitis. I have dyslexia and have problems with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), so you can I have a real learning problem. I am also a volunteer firefighter. I have been a model railroader for about 40 years. I have built 35 layouts for myself and another 9 for friends. I enjoy HO scale the most. I've had 2 N scale layouts but the availability of components in this area is limited. Tried O scale and G scale, but always came back to HO. I use mainly Athearn locomotives though I do have four Life-Like Proto 2000 locomotives (An EMD GP30,an Alco PA1, an EMD E6 and an EMD E7) which I am very happy with. I have several Bachman locomotives as well. Thanks to Bachmann's very spotty quality control (Do they try to make them break?) only 5 out of the 9 I have run well. Although the structures and vehicles on my layout run up to 2005, I run run locos ranging from E6's to GP60's. Who says I can't run what I want? I run 4 road names. Kansas City Southern (KCS), Midland Gulf (MG), Missouri Kansas Texas (MKT) and Lease Management Systems (LMS).
My Layout measures 10' north to south on the west side, 6'5" north to south on the east side, 7'7" east to west on the north side and 3'5" east to west on the south side. It is a 2 line loop with the outside line being a mainline and the inside a branch line. It is standard DC with dual-cab block control and MRC power and sound systems and can be changed to DCC with flip of a switch. It takes my fastest loco 45 seconds on half throttle to traverse the distance of the main line and it is no slouch. This layout is still under construction and the main line and the branch line will eventually be connected with turnouts so they can interchange with each other.

LISA: your thread rename is just fine. Some people have mentioned the Coffee Shop, which I know you go to because I have bought you a coffee or two there, but others have never replied there, and that is Ok too, that is their perogative. Others feel the need to pass judgement on everybody's comments or ideas, so you just take them with a grain of salt. I am sure you have already seen that the this website is 99% great people, 1% wrong side of the bed in the morning.

BTW, 6 days to the Great Train Show in Wilmington, Ma...hope I see you there on Saturday. I plan to be there about 10am.

As to the Neg. responses, I'm sorry you don't like our starting another Coffee shop as you call it but a group of us got to know each other on my other thead and decided to move so as long as we don't break forum rules we are welcome to talk about anything we want and by the way We do talk mainly about our trains if you don't like this thead you don't have to read it I won't be offended really(heavy sarcasm). By the way I do go into the CS and some of the guys have visited my other thread they're not offended so why should you be.

Now for the rest...

Sue, Yea, we're still going down to Wilington next weekend, can't wait. I'm hoping to find some good deals, Maybe even a new engine, I only have desiel and would love to get a steam engine.

Dave it's good to meet ya, I model HO and I agree the are some really good people here. I think they out number the bad.

Jeffery, we've met at the CS and it's great to see you. Thanks for stopping by.

Well I'll talk to those who care later.

I have no problem with this, it is what this community is supposed to be about.

My biggest concern is that if there is a proliferation of chat threads then the one topic threads get bumped to the bottom of the chat ones (assuming they are active on a dally basis Smile [:)] ).  Currently there are a lot more than just the three that people have mentioned and there is a risk that they could overwhelm the first page.

Maybe it is time bergie set up a section for these chats to be posted to?  Then they could all be in one place and easy to access without impacting the other users of the forum  My 2 cents [2c]

Lisa,  I hope you find something great in steam.  Look at the ones with sound.  The kids will love it.  My favorite is a Proto 2000 2-8-8-2.  It pulls 32 cars with little difficulty.  We have several Broadway Limited Locos also.

Now that most of our yard and TT are working, we can actually reroute trains and drop cars.  It is great to not always be working on the layout.  An operating session can be exciting.

Dave, Welcome.  What are you modeling?  My husband and I are modeling HO, primarily NP and Weyerhauser.

Well Lisa, I like the new place!  Very cozy.

You know, I really don't care too much where we hang out.  I've talked with you, and others, in the CS, I even visited the BB once or twice, though I didn't care for it as much.  Thats OK though.  It's my perogative.  I understand that others like it.....thats cool.

So, a bit about myself, huh?

Well, I modeled HO in the '70's, and then in the '80's life got in the way.  In the '90's the bug bit again and as an appt. dweller N scale looked good.  I've been there ever since.  I moved into my new house with my new train room recently and I just bought my lighting for the upper deck of my new layout today.  I'll be hanging it tomorrow.  Then it's time for benchwork and backdrops.

I freelance the Autumns Ridge Railway & Navigation Co. that's set in the 1930's in Maine.  It's a shortline from the coast (on the upper deck) with it's ferry connection, to an interchange with the Maine Central.  The interchange is modeled and the staging connects is all the MEC (outside world).  The MEC trains come on the scene, pick up and drop off cars, and go back to staging.  The main focus of the layout is the shortline.

My plan is a double deck layout that has staging under that.  It's 10x15.  Here's the plan;

Here's the lowest deck, the staging area.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Track%20Plans/My%20Plan/Blank3004-1R1Keeper-1.jpg

Here's the lower sceniced deck with the interchange.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Track%20Plans/My%20Plan/Blank3004-2Keeper-1.jpg

And here's the upper deck, ending with the docks.  The helix will take the trains a bit higher then the dock level so the trains will appear to run downhill to the docks.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Track%20Plans/My%20Plan/Blank3004-3Keeper.jpg

So that's that.

Besides trains, I also work for the phone company full time, go to college full time, and have a family.  It keeps me busy!

Lisa  just about anything in the Proto 2000 steam with sound seems to be good. I just got the 2-8-4 Berkshire (Kanawha) in C&O and it sounds and runs great. The detail is amazing for the money. I had just bought a brass 2-8-4  Kanawha by PSC and I like the Proto 2000 better! Hope that you find what you want at the show.     Big Smile [:D] Jim

Lisa, having The Whistle Stop is fine with me.  Maybe Bergie will make the 'chat rooms' sticky threads that remain at the top of the list.  Who knows.

Philip,  The "anti-hole" is just fine.  Larry did the patching before he left for LA yesterday.  He called early this morning to see if the storm materialized.  It was a little rainy/windy, but nothing like earlier this week.  Thanks for asking.

Lisa,  Do you have anything special on your steam wish list?  What radius curves do you have?  We have a couple of 2-truck Shays that do not care.  We also have a Broadway Limited 2-8-2 that does ok on tighter curves.

George,  We haven't heard from you in a while.  You must be recovering from your last group operating session.  Are your flying cars ok?

People,

I in no way left a negative response, which everyone is claiming I did.

I had no way of knowing is she knew about the other two chat rooms, as I have never seen her there, and in case she didnt, I was just letting her know.

I honestly couldnt care less if we have Three different chatrooms talking about the same thing.

So i wasnt trying to be negative or anything.

Coburn, no sweat, not a big issue at all, and I know Lisa, she has a great attitude and I am sure she didn't get offended one bit, your suggestion about the CS was just fine.

I don't think I have ever seen such white teeth on a dog or for that matter any animal before. Sorta makes me a tad envious.

She is only 7 months old.  I am impressed how white they are.  No, she has not been bleaching them, and I have not had to clean them yet.  Lots of bones are in her path.  I should blow up that picture and hang it at work.

I was neither passing judgement nor complaining. Just making a point. I also included a suggestion. We have a live chatroom on our site. No reason why they couldn't include one here. Also, no reason why any one of us can't get web space to make our own. It is free, after all. Sorry yall chose to bash my idea. It wasn't meant in a negative way. Just an observation.

I don't think my interpretation of yalls' bashing my idea was any more harsh than the response I received. I certainly find all of this quite amusing. If the person starting this thread, and the other long one were a man, I think both threads and the idea for another place to chat, would soon disappear.
