Try www.digitrax.com They have a lot of useful info on the web site, and they also offer "The Big Book of DCC". They also have a video tape available. Robert

I am a DCC dealer for DIgitrax, Lenz, NCE, Soundtraxx and Atlas and I do perform installations as well. The KATO NW2 is a creature unto itself. NO SPace! You have to mill out the frame to make space. I send all my frames to: Brinton Jones 42430 Blacow Road, Fremont CA 94539. He does the milling for about $15.00 for the decoder you specify and also provides you will installation instructions. That's my KATO NW2 recommendation!
Your steam installations will vary from locomotive to locomotive and whether you want sound or not. Some simple installations can have the decoder actually installed in the locomotive, others have the decoder installed in the tender with wires running to the locomotive.
One word on installs. If the locomotive doesnt run well on regular DC, a decoder will perform no magic to make it run better.
There are various sites with installation instructions and ideas, some even supply photos.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
