BN rolling stock in HO scale

I have a BN P2K on order and am looking for BN rolling stock and cannot find very much that is reasonable priced. I looked at Walthers and found a few,  I am looking for boxcars mostly. I am modeling in the mid 70's would BNSF go with a BN GP38-2? Does anyone know where and what brand I could order from the internet. I have not had much luck at finding much.     Thanks   Mike

Mike BNSF is a prduct of the 90's so way too new for your era.  Take a look at the Accurail line of kits http://www.accurail.com/accurail/ in particular the 50' box cars of the different designs, they carry some BN.  In the mid 70's you would also find some old and weathered BN predecessor roadnames in the train.  CB&Q, Great Northern, Northern Pacific.  Some of these are quite colorful, so you can get quite an interesting train.  Accurail kits are not hard to make and are often found at a discount on the web.

Mike,my opinion would be for the cheapest prices,your best bet is going to be Accurail and Athearn.Also check out any area hobbyshops for used equipment from Athearn,Accurail,Roundhouse,and maybe Atlas and Walthers.

For mid 70's BNSF will not fit in as it didn't happen until the mid 90's.

I was thinking BN murged with SF in about '96. All the others mentioned would work, I had not thought of that, They don't have to have the BN logo on them to be right. I will check into that.  I have never built a kit or even seen one, what are they made of.  and what is involved, and how long does it take to make one. Are they already painted with decals or do I need to do all that?    Thanks.       Mike

Mike, they don't have to be even from related roads.  There is no reason why a UP box would not have shown up on a BN train.

Accurail kits are plastic.  They are pre-painted and all the decals are in place.  They are not hard kits to assemble and come with decent instructions.  My 7 and 9 year old assemble them with some help in about 20 minutes, so these are not complex kits at all.  Most of the details are cast on to the kit so you are not left with lots of small parts to fit.  I ususally replace the couplers with Kaydee's.

I'm with Simon.  If you've never put together an AccuRail or Athearn bluebox kit, you're missing a lot of fun.  They are not challenging in any way, but quite enjoyable and satifying to assemble... at least for me.  Along with Kadee (#5 or 148) that Simon mentioned, I also add metal wheels (I use Proto 2000 wheel sets).
