Broadway Limited F7 Service Experience
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 12:51 PM

I sent in one of the B&O F units (#405A) which was malfunctioning several weeks ago. The problem was that it behaved properly under DCC with program track but no sound. The other three of the consist (A-B-B-A) had sound and behaved properly.

The unit returned today at the post office in a nice package, insured, signature required and Priority Mail service. Took it home unwrapped it and there was my unit with a service sheet attached that stated that the magnetic reset was not working and the speaker was replaced.

Placed the unit on the bench and activated it and it worked! It joins the others ready for work on the line.

Now, one thing I did do to the units following Tony's Tech Tip regarding poor sound volume. I had purchased some stik-tak and electrical tape. There was a gap in the speaker at the frame and holes in the roof near the fans. All of the F units recieved electrical tape in the roof and stik tak in the hole at the speaker.

They had to remove the goo in order to replace the speaker, I left the unit as it is because it sounded pretty good with sufficient volume. I dont know if the stik tak was part of the problem but wanted to point that out in case others ran into speaker problems.

Yes it took some weeks for the backlog to work thru BLI's system but once again Im pleased to say that BLI's service is really the best Ive seen in the hobby.

That is good news.  Having to send a loco back is a bummer, but I have done it twice with BLI, and have always had good service.  The first time, it was exactly 3 weeks, but this spring it was more like 7.   I hope that is an indication of good sales and a constant failure rate, as opposed to a rise in failure returns.

I think what is happened is that maybe BLI was buried in incorrect F unit shells and had to work on those replacements.

I think a small percentage of units sold of all kinds has to be a constant failure rate, the rest might be operator error, abuse or other problems.

Each of these positive experiences only reinforces my loyalty as a customer. I think that 1 month is usual turn around.
