Wisconsin Central Boxcar Question
Posted by midwestfan on Monday, August 7, 2006 1:58 PM
I just received a WC DBL Plug Door boxcar made by Athearn. Item #91348 / road number #1008. I was doing research on this car and  i went to www.rrpicturearchives.net  and found no pictures and then went to www.rrfallenflags.org and i did find a picture. It was dated 1994 i believe. My question is: Is this car type still in service for CN (which took over WC) and the prototype has been renumbered? If so, is this car still accurate for a modern era layout (2006 and beyond)?  And does it need renumbered? Thanks.

Perhaps a call to CN/WC car department might help..Seriously..A lot of short line shop foremans will take time to talk to modelers as well car repairman and other railroaders...Or on the other hand you can enjoy your car because it may take years for that car to get repainted or renumbered..I still see thousands of CR cars still wearing CR recording marks as well as BN cars carrying the BN recording marks..

Just because a railroad is merged or bought isn't a sign their cars and their original numbers will disappear..

BTW..I also see hundreds of WC cars with WC recording marks and numbers..

True, I see WC cars coming through Erie PA. on CSX and NS trains all the time. SP, Cotton Belt, BN, Old conrail cars. See lots of stuff. Nobody has time to repaint these days, railroads are to busy and they got rid of too many workers.

Hope this helps. Not sure if it's the DBL Plug Door, but it's the 10XX series.

They are no longer listed in the Official Railway Equipment Register.

The Wisconsin Central Double Plug Door Boxcars in regular service as of 2007 are Exterior-Braced and are 60' Long. These WC Boxcars are similar to the Kellogg's Cereal/Penn Central Boxcars from the 1970's.
