HI-TECH Details Box Car

Has anyone ever built the HI-Tech 40' Baby HY-Cube Box Car? I bought one back in March and Finally got to working on it today. I put the sides and the ends together and also the roof as suggested. Next step was to remove the ladders from the sprues and glue themon. Well I used a Hobby knife, and flush cutters and the ladders broke nomater what I did. My question is can you buy brass ladders that will work for these and if anyone has treplaced the plastic ones with brass how did it turn out?? I ask this due to I will be going to Walthers tomorrow.
