It might be a record, who knows. I do know one thing for sure, when you get the August edition, you know it is almost July.


Can anyone explain why we get the magazine one month early??? It seems like the advertisers would want their ads out on the first day of the month for the magazine, not a month early.

bangert1, If you haven't noticed. Most magazines release their July issue's as August, ect. I don't know why, but every magazine I get does that.

Yes, I get several magazines and they all do the same, but it is not logical to me.

The month date that is listed on magazine covers actually is to alert the book stores and news stands as to when it needs to be pulled from the shelf. That is why you will usually see them put out the month before the date on the cover.

Yea, I would think that too. But I read somewhere that this is standard practice for most magazine racks. It apparently makes it easier for them to maintain a constant flow of new material and keeps the outdated stuff off the racks.

thank for your comments "jflessne" we have a beaufull country here, our railways are getting a massive capital boost now, with new trains and rolling stock on order. most of our locos are from emd and are built as specials for the irish guage 5FEET 3INCHS. AS FOR the heat well we get about 16 deg. c on a good day, but the wind always blows hard.

At least during the 1950's and 60's, most monthly magzines hit the newstands around ten days before the actual cover date. However, when I was writing regularly for a monthly, back in the 1970's and 80's, this changed to a five week lead. The explanation I was given was that issuing the magazine 5 weeks ahead of the cover data increased its "shelf life" or duration of sales. Indeed, in those days it was common to find (for example) the July copy at the rear of the self headed by an August issue, i.e. two month's worth of a given magazine were typically available at any given time, unless sold out.

While not a matter of much real concern for publications like MR, time-critical material suffered in many news-type publications, since the magazines were being put together 3-4 months in advance of the cover date. This was one of the reasons I got out of the business.

Nowadays, however, it seems the newstands/bookstores indeed pull a magazine as soon as the new issue arrives, defeating this concept.

I just can't help but post on this again. A couple of months ago, I found it funny that an MR'r from Canada had gotten his issue before me in Ohio (reason cited: they get their's thru DHL, vs. US snail mail)--now, fingalrails gets his in Ireland before us in Ohio!! I think that's pretty funny. And, no since I've always gotten it before the end of the month, it doesn't really matter to me. If I ever want to be one of the first to get his/her issue in the future, guess I'll have to emmigrate to another country!

given the speed of Air Mail, it's possible for some MR's to get to foreign lands quickly. You may be getting one of the first issues off the press!
