1958 Diesels
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 10, 2006 4:03 PM
Hi Everyone,

I've got a new layout being worked up. It's set in 1958.

I'm hoping that someone can steer me in the right direction to find out just what diesels were in production by that year. Since I'm doing a freelance layout, I can pretty much pick and choose what I want, but I need to know what to choose from.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Only one F9A for L&N and that was a rebuild was built in 1958 by EMD. Over in Canada GMD built some 10 FP9As and 7 F9Bs for Canadian National. This year 1958 was near the very end of F unit production. The market had gone over to the road switcher. Diesel data from A. J. Kristopans EMD Serial number page. [;)]

Bill, I model 1958. Here is a site that I find helpful:
http://www.urbaneagle.com/data/RRdieselchrono.html

The major road switchers in production in 1958 were Alco RS11s, RSD12s,RSD15,s EMD SD9s and GP9s. I think SD24s came into production during the second half of that year. E9s were still being churned out by EMD, but production of F units had ended.

I run RS11s, RSD12s, SD9s, FA/B2s, E8s, RS1s, 2s and 4/5s as freight locos. In passenger service I'm using PA/B1s (could use the E8s). For regular switchers, I'm using VO1000s and SW1200s. If you are in HO, Alco S-x switchers are available, and would have also been plentiful. Alco RS3s would have also been prevalent, but my fictional empire opted C trucks and the RSD5s instead.

:) A couple of F7's and PA/PB sets are at the top of my list!

Mostly, what I need to find out about are freight & road diesels. I know the GP9 was in production, but what else was there?

got this from yahoo search;

EMD GP9 Power type Diesel Build date January 1954 – August 1963 Total production 4,092 (and 165 B units)

An EMD GP18 is a 4-axle diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between December 1959 and November 1963. Power was provided by an EMD 567D1 16-cylinder engine which generated 1800 horsepower (1.3 MW). The GP18 replaced the GP9 in EMD's catalog.

An EMD GP7 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between October 1949 and May 1954. Power was provided by an EMD 567B 16-cylinder engine which generated 1500 horsepower

This should get you started, glad to help

1958 was a very lean year for EMD. It was a recession year. Locomotive types produced at EMD for 1958 were SW600, SW900M, SW900, SW1200, GP9, SD9, 1 E9AM, and the SD24 demonstor #5579.

GMD built the previously mentioned FP9A and F9B, the GP9, SW900, SW1200, GMD-1 and the NF210.

Thanks again to A J Kristopans EMD Serial Number page.

Fairbanks-Morse was building some H12-44 switchers for Nickel Plate, I don't know what else they were building at this time as they were very nearly out of the US market .

The last Baldwins were built in 1956 so any Baldwin model would do.

Remember Bill, just because some diesels weren't produced anymore in 1958, you can still have them. A good roster would be some F units, GP7's and 9s, PAs or Es for passengers, FAs to supplement the Fs, misc. EMD, Alco and Baldwin switchers, and maybe even a few steamers.

ALCO's catalog offered the S-4 for sale from stock. The last 40 S-4s were built by 1956 and the last one was not sold until 1961. The S-4 was replaced in the ALCO catalog by the 1000 horsepower T-6 in 1958. ALCO also offered the 900 horsepower S-6. The RS-1 was offered but none sold in 1958. Other road switchers in the ALCO catalog in 1958 were the RS-11, RSD-12, and RSD-15.

MLW in Canada had a similar line up to ALCO and had introduced the FPA-4 and FPB-4 for Canadian National starting in 1958.

1958 was also a year in which both ALCO and EMD were offering to repower other manufacturer's locomotives with new power plants.

looking at the lists and I wondered in the early years why so few diesels from the major manufacturers, I realize they were into pure Electric loco building as well.
The steam era was going strong then yet still.

The steam era would have probably ended earlier than it did if it hadn't been for two major events. The stock market crash of '29 and World War II.

Bill,

Try to find a copy of "the Diesel Spotters Guide" published by Kalmbach.
You'll find in it everything you'll ever want to know about production dates
and numbers sold of every diesel built in the US. There's a second spotters guide that was publshed later with updated information.

Here is a nice site for production information.
http://www.hazegray.org/rail/product.htm

I don't think you would find many box cabs or early Alco switchers such as the HH600-1000 still operating in 1958..There was still some steam left in 1958 on most roads but, their days was numbered.
