Somebody's cleverness quotient needs to be dialed down a bit.

Actually, I'd argue that they're <all> useless except possibly to the person conducting them...

As I've indicated in another thread today, any on-line polls or survey can only hope to give a very bias view of what is typical in the hobby. They are more misleading than informative since a select group, rather than a cross section, of hobbyists are being polled.

I said informative because there was no other choice that seem to fit. Some POLLS are repetitive, the same things were asked in a POLL months earlier, still others are just plain foolish. However, there are some very good POLLS that give us a good look into how modelers feel about a certain products, or vendors. These are most useful POLLS , at least to me. When I was first getting back into the hobby after many years away, like 50 years, I wanted to know what the most common used HO track was from the viewpoint of the HO modelers. This helped me research and make my choice. I also avoided some construction mistakes by listing some POLLS to get the general view of the HO modelers. So to sum it up, POLLS can be very good,

it all depends on the originator of the POLL .

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! I find the polls to be interesting. You have to be careful because they are subject to ballot stuffing (remember the poll where Z scale was the most popular scale?). And as CNJ831 is fond of pointing out, this forum may not be representive of the hobby as a whole. Still they can give you a quick count on what the forum members think.

Of course it also helps if the poll is well crafted and makes sense. For example the one on Shays vs Diesels doesn't make much sense and the ones on favorite scale yield predictible results (unless there is ballot stuffing). But the one on favorite brand of track tells you which brand the forum prefers which can be useful if you are trying to pick a brand yourself.

Enjoy
Paul

Every once in a blue moon, a good poll comes up, but for the most part, they could be avoided.
Most could be avoided by just doing a history search 1st! [:0]

As far as the post counters/stars, hey Bergie, lets do something useful here. Can we give them up and get spellcheck in return???[}:)][?][;)]

Either or both of the above.

Some are informative, although the content may not be useful to the individual modeler.
Some start off useful, then degenerate into put-downs and flame wars.
Some are of little or no value, frequently because the original poster has not thought out the possibilities or because the subject is totally inconsequential.

All seem to invite dumb answers from people who have nothing to contribute. If you don't have something USEFUL to say, don't say anything. There are better ways to add to your post count!

I voted "No other," because they are sometimes informative, and other times, aren't. This ones a little informative, because you can find out what everyone thinks of polls.[:D]
