Who Do You Model With?

I currently model alone, as my wife is not really interested in the hobby. She willingly lends a hand when I need help with something and when I ran my first train a few days ago, she came upstairs and watched with a big grin on her face and giggling like a little girl, so maybe there is hope yet!

Well, at least I HOPE it's gonna be father with children. I have 5 kids, and I'm hoping to interest at least SOME of them in working with me. They all love one-on-one attention (or 2 on one, or 3 on one, etc.) from me, so I hope they'll work with me.

I figure there's lots of stuff they CAN do - scenery, plaster, holding things while I drive screws, running trains (no, it's NOT a slot-car set - the object is NOT to see how fast they can go!), etc.

We'll see...

It's a bit hard to find fellow modelers! I can't get anyone in my family interested in the hobby. They think I'm crazy but who cares, I enjoy my hobby!

I am THE lone wolf,

wife thinks I'm nuts and everyone else in the family isn't interested. Don't associate with local RR clubs because of bad experiences with manic rivit-counters in past.

Oh Well, I keep telling her "Would you prefer me going out with the guys to Hooters?" I think she realizes that at least I'm at home, and not away for hours at a time, except when I'm at the LHS.

With my boyfriend. We both think we're pretty lucky that we have each other to support the other one. I admit that my interest is in scenery, I used to do floral design. But maybe if you guys told your wives/significant others that it's not playing with trains but three dimensional art, they might look at it differently and take an interest. I can't think of too many women who wouldn't at least love to 'plant a forest' on a landscape. More than would be interested in laying track or electronics.

- I model American prototype and it's quite uncommon in my country (France)
-I model Z scale and it's quite uncommon (for the time, as it could be changing soon) everywhere in the world.

Myself right now. My wife think's I'm nuts. But as vsmith pointed out, I do tell her that I could be out with the boys. Most of the time she's ok with it until there's a MUST HAVE at the local hobby shop. Oh well. It's still cheaper than a classic car.

I model with a group of friends here in my area. Two of us are building layouts and we all help with that. We also have a modular layout that we take to shows.

Once I was a lone wolf but friends make the hobby much, much more enjoyable. Train night is not only an excuse to work on the railroad but also an opportunity to meet, shoot the bull, and generally have a night with the guys.

I have already posted a reply to this earlier in the topic, but I found it rather interesting how many 'guys' model alone, as far as MRR goes.

While my boyfriend thinks that he's so lucky to have me interested in this hobby, I feel that I'm the lucky one. I've always had an interest in Art and Crafts and at one time had my own part-time business doing silk floral wreaths and arrangements for people. My ex-husband absolutely hated it and spent every moment making my life miserable whenever I was making something to "sell", you know make money. His opinion was that it was a waste of time and was always PO'd that I wasn't devoting all of my spare time to him. Keep in mind that I worked ( and still do) a full time job and have three children. At least the Pope only expects you to kiss his ring, if you catch my drift. (No offense to Catholics, I used to be one) So, I can really appreciate what you all go through not getting support for a hobby that you obviously find great pleasure and relaxation in. I guess I feel that I'm so lucky because I can do something that I find very relaxing and mentally stimulating and the win-win situation for me is that I can share it with my sweetie. And I know that he could tell you the same story regarding his ex-wife. So I can really empathize with what's going on for those who model alone.[:I]

Anyway, just had to add my two cents worth.

My wife and I complete eachother quite well on more points than I care to count,and that includes model railroading.My favorite part is the engineering that goes in the construction and operation of a good layout,while she is interested in the cosmetic part.She's always been interested in all sorts of modeling,handcrafting,etc....so that just showing her some great layout pictures in MR caught her interest immediately.
She does great scenery(I couldn't do better,honest) but doesn't care much about the little trains but sees them as the essence of the whole thing and leaves that part to me.
