Is there any model railroaders in SC ?
Posted by dragonriversteel on Thursday, June 1, 2006 8:12 PM
Hello all,

I have to ask this question. Is there any model railroader is the state of South Carolina ? I did belong to a model railroad club here in Beaufort ,but these guys talked about everything accept model trains. When we had meetings at each other's houses , it was more like who had the best munchies ,car ,house Ect

Hell I'll drive to meet with fellow model railroaders, besides my wife would like to get rid of me for a day or so. I'll bring some of my model trains,.....have trains will travel.

With all due respect, these people here are about as boring as a sofa sale.

Dragon. I'm from Bennettsville, just north of Florence. There is a descent hobby shop over in Florence and a few modelers over there. I'm in the same boat as you. Just doesn't seem to be that many model railroaders in South Carolina. The first response I get when I talk to someone is they used to have trains but they became discouraged because they were junk. I feel like if they got a good look at quality trains they would change their minds. What scale do you model? I'm into HO with hand laid track and mostly scratch built structures. I model the Southern Pacific from the early 60's until the end. I just change out the Locomotives and cars to change the time period. If you like we could stay in touch but e-mail.

I'm out in the Greenville area. I do N Scale. I haven't found any clubs around here. There is some pretty good action up in Hendersonville, NC. I don't think that model railroading is dead in this area as there are 4 or 5 hobby shops in the area.

Hello Mike,

I'm into HO scale operation having many locomotives and freight cars. What really toots my interst is Model Steel mill operation. Steel mill structures often have to be scratch built . I don't lay my own track though, I'll leave that to the pro's.

I model Norfolk Southern , outside the mill and DRSC own locomotives inside the mill. Sure we can stay it touch through e-mail. I plan on this summer ,making a trip to AROC , in Columbia,SC to view their layouts.

I didn't really mean for my first posting on this thread to be flippant - I was just trying to have some good natured fun. For instance I love the New York Central - best telephone exchange I ever did business with - right now there are dozens of NYC fans grinding their teeth.

Seriously, I have a difficult time comprehending a Model Railroad Club where the members wanted to do everything else except talk about modeling and model railroading. Chances are pretty good that if you got disgruntled and quit others have also; you need to find these guys but I can't give you the first inkling about how to do that.

I'm not acquainted with the Charleston area but my gazateer indicates a population in the vicinity of 100,000; add another 100,000 in the extended metropolitan area and your dealing in the ballpark of 200,000 to 250,000. I have a difficult time believing there is not at least one major hobby shop in that area. Locate it and make a trip up there occasionally. I haven't run into a hobby shop yet that didn't have some kind of a bulletin board; put a note on it seeking contacts in the Beaufort area. Savannah, I believe, is even larger and you might consider an occasional trip down there.

You signed yourself as writing from "The Crappy South". I'm going to surmise that you have relocated there from somewhere else. I spent twenty years in the Air Force and made a lot of acquaintences with people who had had assignments in North Carolina or Georgia - South Carolina I can't say - and, almost to a man, they all loved the south.

I reside in a very, very large metropolitan area, one of the largest in the country. Considering our population we really do not have a very dense model railroad following. It is very warm here - that should give you a powerful hint of where I'm talking about - and we have a very good Garden Railway following but that same factor is indicative of the fact that there are a lot of (winter) outdoor activities that take place. Around here summer is the time to "stay indoors and work on the railroad"; this isn't Chicago or Minneapolis!! With a few exceptions model railroading activity tends to drop off the warmer the year-round climate becomes.

Oh, OK, I'll butt in. I may live in Georgia, but only about an hour or so from SC. I would like to meet fellow modelers as well, even if I do have to make a bit of a drive. I have another thread on this matter here:

Feel free to email me. I'm preparing to move sometime this month, hopefully with a decent size basement to play in!

What makes you think any self respecting Southerner would want to spend time with someone who describes our area as "The crappy South & Boring." Typical altitude of some Yankees that move in and start complaining about the locals because we're not like the people or the place they moved away from. Yankee go home. Bill

Bill,

There it is, the stereotypical namecalling. As it stands you just proved my point about people in the crappy south. Thank you for your warm southerner hospitality, and I was referring to the area I'm living in, not you in general go figure.

I'm from New York City and love the South. Only problem is many southerners I've run into are still fighting the Civil War. LOL!

Patrick, are there really that few modelers in SC? I would think there are lots of clubs and modelers. Although you would think there would be many modelers in New York but alas I cannot find them. I can't even find a good hobby shop here for me. Perhaps it is not an isolated problem to your area.

Why is it that when someone replys to an obvious insult they are branded as name callers? The fact is that no matter where you live you'll find good people and bad people. And by the way, don't defend yourself by saying that you didn't mean what you did in fact say. Say what you mean and if you don't mean to generalize, then don't do it. Southern hospitality is alive and well for those who are wiling to overcome their own prejudicial attitudes.

The shop I frequented in Florence was Bandits Hobbies. It has moved to US 52 Bypass in Darlington. They have a good selection of kits and scratch building supplies, as well as HO and N scale rolling stock. Their display setup (HO) is small but quite well detailed. The owners are very freindly, Rose will talk your head off.

In Greenville There is one on Woodruff Rd. In the Strip Mall. 2 shops on US 123, One is 99% trains of most scales called Rail and Spike. The other has some HO (caters primarily to the RC crowd). One on Main St. in Pickens that has some HO. One on Laurens Rd. that has a good selection of O, HO and N scale, they have an O, HO N scale display setup that blends the 3 scales together very nicely. There is another North of Greenville that I have not located yet. Of the ones I have found, Rail and Spike gets most of my local purchases.
