What is your favorite type of MR article?

There are really three kinds of articles I look for:

• Suggestions on modeling prototype industries (including track plan and operational suggestions) - can't get enough of these


• Practical how-to's on various techniques


• Small space modeling (8x10 plans, shelf layout, under-bed, etc.)

This and some other postings refer to enjoyment of construction projects, electronic and otherwise. Is anyone interested in fairly simple electronic project articles (related to model railroading of course) which solve specific problems and also explain the operation of the circuits in easy to understand language so the reader/builder learns some practical electronic theory and can apply it to other circuits of their own design?

I'm actually building one of Jon Gregg's projects; in this case, the Alberta Granary. Its a little challenging but I have had a lot of fun with it - its only my second scratch built structure.

I really miss Art Curren's brilliance and I hope some one will eventually step forward and take up the slack. It wasn't until I had re-read most of my MR's about 5 times that it dawned on me how significant a contributor he was to MR and the hobby.

My favorites are the simple ideas that enhance the flavour of the railroad.
Bruce Chubb's DCC optimized detector and Jeff Scherb's "simple circuits for automatic block signals" are brilliant, yet simple to implement. Any scratch building project by Jon Greggs (he's a local Calgary guy that has had 3 articles about building local industries - I'm a little biased).
I really enjoy the weathering articles, too.

I enjoy articles about the latest advances in model railroad control as well as any article written by Andy Sperandeo. One of my all time favorite article series was
"Railroads you can Model". I still refer these in old back issues from time to time.
As joseph2 has already stated, I also miss Gordon Odegard. Jim Kelly is also a

My favorite articles are on how to build scenery. I enjoy seeing different styles. Anybody who does scenery has a little bit of a different technique on how things are done. Also enjoy reading series articles that show putting together a layout in the different stages.

I also enjoy articles on how to weather items.

Personnally,I enjoy the magazine as a whole,but my favorite articles are the ones describing clever solutions to specific problems,like making the most out of available space or how to make a non-prototypical track plan look like the real thing thanks to well planned scenery.These are the points that catch my attention...neat tricks.

I have said this before here, but the MRP issue dedicated to junctions was just like that - a silly waste of space. Well, since I read the articles in that MRP once, I've read them at least another ten times - great stuff. Why didn't I see it right away!

I just re-read David Barrow's ideas on representation versus prototypical modelling. More and more I find myself siding on the representational concept of modelling - kind of like impressionism versus realism in oils.

3) I really enjoyed those little stories about the coal belt (and the pics) by whoever that guy was that did them. Unfortunately the seem to have gotten the kabosh by the "hobby grousers" we see so much of in these forums
