I was thinking of fitting smoke units to some diesels (especially Alcos) when I found this...

Surely this can't be blamed on DCC?

This is a real train, not a model, so it has nothing to do with DCC or a smoke unit.

I have a video of a Conrail train with one of the diesel engines shooting a column of fire into the air periodically, and a large cloud of black smoke in between. This can possibly be a result of a diesel engine's injectors being out of adjustment or the air filters getting clogged,

Mnother cause is soot building up and igniting. Very spectacular to watch.

You probably could model the same results by using fuel oil and triple the voltage to the smoke unit. Just make sure your home owners insurance is paid up and the layout is on a rider. [swg]
