Starting FROM SCRATCH, wife is behind the effort. SO, since June 1, 2003 $3,500.00 and stll spending. When I did this in 1962 you coud have budget of $100..00/ mo and do well. Heck we spent $1,000.00 on just books and Basics!

Oh, I didn't really count trips and stuff in my estimate, nor magazine subscriptions I paid for three years at a time!

If I added up the amount of $$ per hour of model railroading fun, I would have thought that I had spent a lot of loot. But the fact is, I scrach build most all my structures from styrene and now built up rolling stock kits that I had for years. This hobby is a lot cheeper than Fly Fishing, Hunting, Boating and RV's.

My wife almost fainted when she first saw my (not huge in my opinion) collection of rolling stock, and calculated how much I spent on it so far. Now the only time I tell her how much it costs when I bring home a locomotive or car is when she asks LOL.

Way to much! [:0] I spend roughly 1600.00 (+/-) a year on the hobby..Being a bachor I can afford to that...I have stop buying locomotives that I really didn't need or fit my C&O and C&HV.. Looking ahead I see 2 or 3 the Athearn CF7s for my C&HV for club use and perhaps 2 Atlas Alco C424s in Belt Railway of Chicago as I have 2 Athearn IHB units that I use from time to time at the club.

this is really sad, but last year I spent 2K. This year so far 1.5K and its only half way through. I guess thats why i am not married...lol.

The last few years its been less than $300 Canadian what with two kids and one income. This year the purse strings are a bit looser and it will likely end up around $500.

I find my needs are getting fewer as my rolling stock and structures accumulate and am spending more time on scenery which tends to be more labour-intensive per dollar spent on material.

I think last year and the year before, I probably spent close to $1000 and then turned around and spent about the same on momma, just to keep the peace.
