To Judy; My comments while appearing to be critical, are not. As I said I welcome all including women into this hobby. It's a hobby for all and it is supposed to be fun. I have daughter whose 27 years old and you wouldn't believe the effort it takes to stay one step ahead of her in the chain pulling arena. Many times she catches me off guard, and sucks me right in. She's a sweetheart and her interest in my hobby has been a joy to me. Her mom, the love of my life for 33 years has only a casual interest, but any interest is much appreciated. When you posted this forum, the old gears started to turn and just couldn't resist the practice. You've been great sport and you have my admiration for taking the stance that you have. Keep it up because if more young ladies like yourself had the interest in model railroading that you do, believe me thier spouses would really think it was great. Your always going to run into the guys who think that women and model railroading are like oil and water, don't let them discourage you. By the way I'm not one of them. I hope in the future, that you and I are always on the same side. Happy MRRing.[:)][:)]PS; you weren't supposed to see the first posting, sorry bout that.[B)]

I spent 5 yrs in a hobby shop and behind the sales tables of shows and seen some women in the hobby. They are rare but there out there. At the present time I have met only one woman locally that is into model railroading. There must be some more in the area.
I noticed that at shows many of the women said the did most of their purchacing at shows . One said she was uncomfortable going to the local shop because she felt out of place with the men in the shop.
Another thing I noticed that there are many woman in toy train collecting, One told me she got into the hobby because when she was growing up nobody gave trains to little girls show she was making up for it now (BTW she also modeled in N Scale)

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

Judy ;
There are no doubt compelling reasons why closet chauvinists "'come out "on internet forums, whereas they often lack the gumption to do so in everyday life.
My wife won't answer your question, not because she doesn't like trains...it's because she doesn't like the internet, so never logs on.
She doesn't care much for the model building element, but is an enthusiastic painter of figures and buildings, and makes excellent trees from kits and from scratch.

Your "pink and frilly" comment means you more accurately have just one year of practise, repeated without progress or improvement, 33 times over.[B)]

To Emeraldisle:

Your response would have been appropriate if the questions had been "Should women be in model railroading?", not how many are in it.

However, having said all that, your apology is accepted[^][^][^][^][^]

Pink trains? What does that have to do this topic?

To Emeraldisle-

I see that you edited your response from what you had originally posted. Your edited version was far nicer than your original post. There are times in our lives if when we write things it might be better to walk away for a moment and let things rest before hiting the send button.

To Emeraldisle-

You by all means are entitled to your opinions. That's what makes America great, we can all agree to disagree without being disagreable.

No one was asking for pink trains or frills on train windows, just how many women are in this hobby. And for that matter, anybody who knows me personally, knows that I'm not the pink, frilly type. Judging by the response to this question and to other questions, there are a great many men out there who really wi***hat their wives or girlfriends were interested in their hobby and would participate. I'm not sure of your marital status, nor do I care to know. If you don't want women messing with your personal layout that's your business, but do try to keep an open mind. After all, this is the new millenium.

And we can be in this hobby if we like so you might want to built a bridge and get over it.

Cheers

Well, Krod, I would most certainly agree that when you decide to get married that finding someone to share your interests, especially your love of model railroading, is a very important quality. But you might be handed a reality check about having one (railroad) take up the whole house. FYI guys - for those of you who are unattached and trying to explain this hobby to potential dates, don't say that you play with trains, but rather that you are into three dimensional art. In the restaurant business (which I am in) they say presentation is everything. This is true with most things.

And, hobbies and interests are two way streets in relationships.

Hope to hear from more of you.

Thanks

Man this is going ot make you cry. My freinds fiance loves his trains. She has her own ABA set of the Genesis Funits and her own passenger train to go with it. She is not a serious modeler like him, but she tries to get a little involved. He just needs to go do her things sometimes. Keep in mind, relationships and life don't revolve around trains. There are other enjoyable things out there.

To my shock I was recenty at a train show and saw 2 women my age there....not only did they like trains, but they were my age. This happened long before I found this site. It was a total shocker to me to see 2 girls that were "attractive" and 20 walking around looking at trains and actually making purchases and such. Being as the only women I had ever seen in the hobby were either much older and married, or not as attractive as I was looking for this was amazing to me. Unfortunatly for me I am too shy and didnt approach either, lol. Maybe after my empire is all together and i see them again I will say hi. LOL...just wanted to give a shout to the girl sightings. I am glad to see that women find interest in the hobby as I could absolutly not marry someone that didnt at least appreciate my love for trains. Expecially since i have 5 Lionel sets, 6 AF sets, 2 HO sets, 20 Lego train sets, and so my main hobby line which is N scale which i have more pieces and things for than I can count. So any woman I marry better love the things since they would take up the majority of any house.

Probably there are more women in bass fishing than in our hobby. However many women are in Model Railroading, my guess is that they they vastly outnumber how many men are in Quilting clubs.
I see more and more couples in our hobby the past few years, especially in Garden RR'ing, and the various G gauge scales, inside as well.

My wife is supportive of my hobby but not really interested in building or operating on the layout. She doesn't mind the odd railfanning outing and does find old train stations very interesting.

My five-year-old daughter is quite the railfan and often asks me to run the layout. She's taken the throttle a few times and is suprisingly deft at switching moves. Hopefully that means there'll be 1 more woman model railroader in the years to come.

The Campbell school house kit I bought my wife 30 years ago is still unbuilt. (She expressed an interest it, but I now think that was just because I was into trains.) Now she accepts it, even gave me a Lionel train set this past Christmas. This will be the Christmas tree train, since I otherwise model in S scale.
