How Many Women Are In Model Railroading?

I haven't met that many in the field, but I know some are out there. I will say this, the main reason I started spending more time modeling was because of a nasty break up with my ex-girlfriend a few years ago. This hobby worked as a good defense system to avoid the problems she caused for me. Now working a late shift in a restuarant leaves little time to go get modeling supplies or meet women, a no win scenario.

My wife hates the idea of model railroading, but has been supportive in giving up the space. I live in the Dallas area, too, and of course, we have no basements. But she let me have the upstairs family room for the 12 X 17 layout. Occaisionally, her frustration at having given up the space surfaces, but not badly. And, occaisionally, a vistor at the front door of our open floor plan home will look up and say something like, "OMIGOD, what is that thing up there" and of course, she freaks at the idea that our home won't make into home beautifiul or Architectural Digest! Of course, with three kids, it wouldn't anyway. The houses in that magazine are unattainable as the railroads we see in MR

My five-year-old daughter is quite the railfan and often asks me to run the layout. She's taken the throttle a few times and is suprisingly deft at switching moves. Hopefully that means there'll be 1 more woman model railroader in the years to come.

Probably there are more women in bass fishing than in our hobby. However many women are in Model Railroading, my guess is that they they vastly outnumber how many men are in Quilting clubs.
I see more and more couples in our hobby the past few years, especially in Garden RR'ing, and the various G gauge scales, inside as well.

To my shock I was recenty at a train show and saw 2 women my age there....not only did they like trains, but they were my age. This happened long before I found this site. It was a total shocker to me to see 2 girls that were "attractive" and 20 walking around looking at trains and actually making purchases and such. Being as the only women I had ever seen in the hobby were either much older and married, or not as attractive as I was looking for this was amazing to me. Unfortunatly for me I am too shy and didnt approach either, lol. Maybe after my empire is all together and i see them again I will say hi. LOL...just wanted to give a shout to the girl sightings. I am glad to see that women find interest in the hobby as I could absolutly not marry someone that didnt at least appreciate my love for trains. Expecially since i have 5 Lionel sets, 6 AF sets, 2 HO sets, 20 Lego train sets, and so my main hobby line which is N scale which i have more pieces and things for than I can count. So any woman I marry better love the things since they would take up the majority of any house.

Man this is going ot make you cry. My freinds fiance loves his trains. She has her own ABA set of the Genesis Funits and her own passenger train to go with it. She is not a serious modeler like him, but she tries to get a little involved. He just needs to go do her things sometimes. Keep in mind, relationships and life don't revolve around trains. There are other enjoyable things out there.

No one was asking for pink trains or frills on train windows, just how many women are in this hobby. And for that matter, anybody who knows me personally, knows that I'm not the pink, frilly type. Judging by the response to this question and to other questions, there are a great many men out there who really wi***hat their wives or girlfriends were interested in their hobby and would participate. I'm not sure of your marital status, nor do I care to know. If you don't want women messing with your personal layout that's your business, but do try to keep an open mind. After all, this is the new millenium.

And we can be in this hobby if we like so you might want to built a bridge and get over it.
