Does anyone know if csx has a schedule for repainting their units to dark future paint? I have many HO scale csx units in the bright future paint and wanted to know how long some of my locomotive had until their real life counterparts got repainted.

I doubt that they have a schedule for it. Since the locomotive makes the railroad no money while it is being repainted, they generally save that for a time when it is going to be out of service, anyway. Given the reliability of modern locomotives, that could be a while.

I'm sure a lot of perfectly good power is going to get scrapped in the Bright Future scheme just because of that fact Mark mentioned. I'd bet money that the majority of the Dash-8s and second generation EMDs are going to be really rare in the Dark Future paint.

Cheers!

Thanks for your replies. There are only 2 dash 8's in dark future just to be exact.

I don't see the Dark Future scheme too often. Most CSX units are still running around in the Bright Future, or even Conrail blue. Case in point: When I was in Grafton, WV over Easter weekend, there weren't any Dark Future units in the area.

You'll see a gradual change over as the years progress. Plus any new locomotives will have the paint scheme from the factory.

If you have a camera and live near a CSX mainline, take shots while you still can as the ranks of SD40-2s and other units from the 70s and early 80s are thinning.

What is this "Bright future" and "dark future" scheme you guys are talking about? I feel like it is easier an inspirational seminar or something to do with Darth Vader and star wars. Can someone post pictures?

Here you go!
This is Dark Future:
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=20382

-It has the dark blue all over it with yellow letters, numbers, side sills, and step edges. Some other various parts are painted yellow.

This is Bright Future:
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=328901

-It has gray all over, with blue letters, yellow numbers and trim, also with some various parts being painted yellow.

This is a different type of the Bright Future - Phase II:
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=142024

_It is just like the first phase of the Bright Future, only it has yellow letters and some other additional parts that are yellow. This also has the two lightning bolts around the numbers. This scheme was applied only to AC6000CWs.

Hope that helps!!

While there is no schedual per-say, CSX is repainting all units as they come in for major overhauls.

4884 Big Boy - I already said that in my post.

Just a quick question: Why isn't there a lightning bolt under the number on 402, and why is it even painted in Dark Future?

I dont figure they plan it but they just might. I am beginning to model the CSX types that make runs through WVA. Hope you find out, even though I wouldn't worry about it because you will find out sooner or later!
