Don't worry about it.

They are meaningless and will be gone soon.

the stars are based on how many posts you make...i'm not to sure of the number but it depends on how much posting you do..i believe to get the max of 5 stars you have to make 2000 posts...and as Dave said:..."don't worry about it"...MR mag. is supposed to put up a new forum format sometime this year and they are doing away with the stars eventually.......I got way too many stars...want some of mine?

I think you have to rescue her from a giant gorilla.

No, no! You run down to the tracks and cut the ropes, and drag her off the tracks in front of the train, as Snidely Whiplash says, "Curses, foiled again!"

(Forgot this was a train forum for a minute. Gorillas. Yeah, right.)

[#ditto] but what's this about them being gone? Are we getting a new system? This one has been getting really slow sometimes.....

Don't GIVE them away! Put 'em on e-Bay. Some fool will be willing to pay big bucks for them!! (Remember the toast with a picture of Jesus on it?)

Some e-Bay buyers will buy ANYTHING!!

One would think it would be just as easy to simply answer the question.

The gorilla reference is valid for a trains forum. Remember the elevated subway cars the big guy tossed around like a 2-year old with Lionel trains?

Almost there... almost at 50 posts... so close... (50 posts is where you get your first star) from the look of things, you're almost there, also. [tup]

Thankfully, Bergie has announced that MR is going to change their software and eliminate the stars sometime this year.

Any idea when the new software is going in. I know, sometime this year. Anyone able to narrow it down from that?

Is the reason for the software improvement to speed up the response time of the forum?

You dont want a star. They've caused more flame wars than the steam vs. diesel thread. Why on earth do you want one?

It's better to have 10 quality posts that 1000 crappy posts.

They are a fun thing about how many posts you have made. Unfortunately, some folks got their knickers in a twist over them. So Bergie has announced that later this year they are going away, I think in conjunction with a forum software upgrade. At which time we'll have several more threads about why they went away. Some one will also start a petition to bring them back.

Enjoy them for now, but don't get hung up on them.
Enjoy
Paul

If you want to build up your stars fast, then post frivolous replies (like this one) to any topic that comes along, and then reply to anyone who replies to you. You might even want to try a lot of "me too" posts. [:D][;)]

But then again, I understand they are finally going to do away with them pretty soon anyway. [tup]

The original intent was probably backed by sound reasoning. If a person had many stars, he/she "probably" was a very knowledgable person as it pertained to Model Railroading. In "some" cases, I have found this to be true. I have come to use the opinions and ideas of several very knowledgable people on this forum, some with many stars, some with fewer. The formula ..." X" Stars = MRR Knowledge does NOT hold water . Look at the QUALITY of the answers to your questions, and you will very soon realize who cuts the mustard and who doesn't.

Personally, I think that when the stars go away, we will see far less unrelated threads, and the quality will rise.

Also, I hope that the new software upgrade incorporates some new features that are needed on the forum as well as dividing the "General" forum into more areas such as, DCC forum or sub-forum, Benchwork, Wiring, etc. It will make it easier I feel, to locate info for past threads on these subjects etc. I know you can find them now, but it can be improved and made faster for retrievals.

Good luck Bergie et al...can't wait to see the rollout later this year.

right on. I'd like to think I have a decent amount of knowledge. But I have an addiction to this forum which is what explains why I have so many posts.
