Newbie model railroader introduction
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 9, 2006 11:57 PM
Hi everyone. I thought I'd drop a note on here introducing myself. I grew up completely fixated on trains, both model and fullsize. For several years I had a simple HO layout on the standard 4x8 plywood. Then, as I recall, I discovered girls and somehow that trainset lost its luster. Fast forward 20 years, and my wife buys me a simple HO set for Christmas after watching my eyes gloss over while looking at an HO set at some mall. NOW all I can think about is getting back into the hobby.

When I last had a trainset I didn't know what I was doing, but managed to only burn out one powerpack. Now I'm an electrical engineer....which means I can really do some damage this time! The advent of DCC and all of the cool electronics I can now imagine are only adding to my desire to build something!

I look forward to posting lots of questions on here and hopefully providing some answers, too!

Cheers.

First of all Tim welcome to the forums glad to have you.

You will find alot of newbies and old hands here if you have a question you can either look thru the search and see if its been talked about or just lay it on the line and if we know we will tell you. There are thousands of sites and tons of info availible online and in books both of which I recommend. Now that you have the trains you need space to set them up and a good hobby shop to help you along the way.

Tim,

Welcome back to the hobby. Much has changed in the past 20 to 30 years. Read everything you can, ask a lot of questions before you spend any $$$ and don't let the magazines scare you off.....

Contrary to the impression younger modelers get and Encore Modelers such as yourself, THIS HOBBY DOESN'T HAVE TO COST AN ARM AND A LEG to enjoy.

Happy Rails To You!

Well I just joined today, and my story is identical! Came here to find out about wiring my first layout in over 30 years, and have found so many topics of interest that my wife is going to have to pry me off this computor.

Welcome to both of you! Stripes2, don't forget to take time away from the computer to build your layout!

Welcome home, Tim!

Gotta watch them wimmen, boy! 48 years ago my girlfriend gave me a kit for a Japanese-prototype 2-6-4T because she noticed how much I liked seeing the genuine article. That fixed my scale/gauge interest at 1:80/16.5mm I've been modeling it ever since. As for the girlfriend, we recently celebrated our 45th anniversary.

Hi Tim,

Welcome to the forum. We'll look forward to your questions. You know, I've seen some of the greenest people come into the forum and ask some of the most thought provoking questions. Of course, I've seen some others who really needed their hands held. It's all good. We all have to start out as beginners sometime. Whatever your questions, we'll fix you right up and set you back on the tracks.

HOLY SMOKES! Of all the message boards/forums I have ever belonged to, this is definitely the warmest welcome I have ever received. Even if my posting did include "Newbie" in the subject line. (if you haven't read the thread "You know the post is bad when.." then that joke makes no sense at all).

That's not cool Tim... You freaked me out. I thought we were dealing with an easy going troll there for a minute.

Anyways. Welcome to the forum, and back to the greatest hobby in the universe.

Tim: The whole "You know the post is bad when..." turned ugly, I know. Even though I participated, I didn't knock on the newbie threads. I am always glad to see new people-New to the hobby, or just new to the forum.

Once again, that was just a little fun that turned in the wrong direction.

Welcome to the foums!
