That's what is completly wrong with society today is that people expect the world to change to suit them individually of how they feel about things, what they do and don't believe in, etc... We have to be 'politically' correct. Someone mentioned above there is over 200,00 members here. So in essence no matter what I choose for my user name, someone can possibly be offended by it. Should I have to change it every single time for every person who dislikes it or should people take it for what's it's worth, stop trying to make it out worse than what it is. IT'S JUST A NAME!!! Yes you and many others know what the name is and what it is, but that's all it is. If I came out here with the name of Saint Matthew no one out here would probably even give that a second thought nor care nor even probably notice. Take a good *** look next time you type up a message to the smilies to the left of the message box that your typing in that there is a devils face. If my name pisses you off and offends you then you *** well better be ***ing and complaing to the moderators of this forum that there is actually a face of the devil out here....don't matter if it's cartoon like or not. Stop being a bigget and judgemental and stop being an***over something that means nothing personal to anyone. Stop blowing the sitution out of perportion.

I'm done with this rediculess thread.

P.S. Thank you for the Welcome,

I've already welcomed you to the forum via e-mail, but I'll do it again.

One of my forum rules is that we don't discuss politics or religion in the Trains.com reader forum. Seems either topic typically - no, make that ALWAYS - leads to an argument between people who are otherwise perfect friends. Your username is a perfect example. I understand that it seems like you're being singled out just because a few members don't like your username, but I'm sorry, you're not the first cases where I've had people change other usernames. No, I'm not picking on you either. I'm just trying to get this forum back to order. Again, sorry, it probably doesn't seem fair.

Also, since you're new, you may not have notice the lack to swearing around here. It's a strict rule. There are children who visit this forum, plus, there's no need to swear in a forum that's SUPPOSED to be talking about model trains.

Our swear-word filter catches most swear words... that's why you *** litered throughout the post above.

So please, no swearing. And that's written or implied... using symbols to mask a swear word is still swearing in my book.

No, gentlemen, can we get back to the reason we host this forum? [Locked]

Thanks,
Erik

i wish i had more imagination when i picked my user name and chose something really cool that would generate five pages of response.

what i have learned so far is just what it takes to get the masses rockin and rollin and all excited.

my layout is a movie set, and like all movies what you highlight is what people see.

thank you beezlbubb for the valuable lesson. my artist license is more valuable than ever.

It has taken me all of my free time this evening to read through this one thread. I can not believe this thread has gone on for five pages. I think the word train was mentioned only six or seven times in all those posts. Joe F, thanks for trying.

I'll use Lord_B when addressing our newest forum member, mainly cause I'm lazy and like to abbreviate when I can. I don't think I could consistantly spell Beelzebub and I hate mispellings in posts. Anyway....Ask away Lord_B! I missed your first post but welcome you to the forum. I understand you were asking about DCC and perhaps my limited experience can help, perhaps not. {Pssst....this forum is a treasure trove of information and helpful modelers. But watch out, some folks get really peeved over the slightest thing, as you have found out. Human nature, I guess. I learned to ignore most of that and post my responses to threads in as pleasing a manner as possible. The only flaming I like to see is in the videos of 4-4-0 fireboxes getting stoked. Welcome to the forum!!}

You make a condescending remark about jumping to conclusions and once again in your arrogance you expect no response. Thanks for the "sparky" comment too... what does that mean where you come from? I presume it is another attempt to be clever by another older member who thinks he is better than me because he is closer to retirement than me. Nice try, wont wear it.

Nope. Not closer to retirement than you are. Retired.[:D][:D][:D][:D]

Like I said, I have no problem with Lord_Beelzebub's screen name and had I seen the original thread, I would have come down on those overreacting to it. OTOH, Kalmbach is the final arbiter of everything that appears here. It doesn't have to be spelled out explicitly.

Incidentally, you seem to be going a long way to blow this thing out of proportion if the length of your reply to my short post is any indication.

I didn't blow anything out of proportion, I merely responded to the patronising and childish nonsense that was started when fools like SLF started infering LB was a smurf of Al and I use the word fool in its most inclusive sense. The self appointed forum detective couldn't track an elephant through snow let alone have any idea about the identity of LB. I notice that he is still trying to flog that dead horse.

QUOTE: Grubby, you are overheated buddy, calm down.

Far from being overheated, I am merely passionate. I dont give a toss whether you like LB's name or not. If you cant see the arrogance and ignorance displayed on these forums almost daily and especially in this case, maybe you aren't as special as you would have yourself believe. I still can't believe that you would be so arrogant to even suggest he changes his name... surely that is a matter for himself, he doesn't want to (as indicated in another post) and your "suggestion" is clearly unwelcome and patronising.

It would be a sad day when a 33 year old man couldn't make a decision on his forum name all by himself with the Peanut Gallery having to pass it first by popular vote. As for your version of "religion" and the forums, many people seem to be exhibiting a base line religious value that is in conflict with the no religion concept. If religion has no part then how can you be offended by something as simple as a user name? I should realistically be able to be a gay activist with tattoos of 666 on my forehead and user name to match and as long as I talk about trains it should be fine and within the rules.

This forum has a history, and part of its history is the establishment of its culture. Were it not for the fixed entity that established the ground rules that set the cultural development in motion, this place could easily descend into the circuses from where many of our denizens have fled.

So, the preponderance of members who contribute regularly...this is important... who contribute regularly, have become the defacto monitors and gatekeepers in the absence of other input. Occasionally when we stray, the Great Bergermeister in the Sky puts his large thumb down, and we get back in line.

So, when persons heretofore unheard, or who are relatively new, behave in a way that suggests the rest of us regulars have it all wrong, would it take so much intelligence to assume that a few of us might take offence?

Long sentence follows:

Once again, if a person uses any handle that invites speculation about its intended purpose, and that person tells us that we don't know what we're talking about when we intimate that it is questionable, if not downright offensive and inflammatory, in the "culture" so painstaking cultivated in a systemic way between the moderator and the "regulars" (who's voices are the only ones that get weighed on a daily basis, and which, of necessity, are the only ones that can be used to set the tone), is it really so outrageous for those regulars to voice their dismay?

It appears that some think so.

Welll.....

I gotta weigh in a little here. Does anyone find MY username offensive? I am religious, but LB's username doesn't offend me. Nobody's username here offends me. Is a name really a reflection on ones personality? Not always, I say. If my username offended anyone, would I change it? Only if requested (along with a logical explanation) from the moderators. Otherwise, no, I would not. Where did I come up with my username? Well, that's also my Yahoo! username, and my eBay username, so I simply carried it over. Makes it simpler when all my accounts have the same username, you see. I suspect LB did the same thing. Same username on all accounts is easier to remember.

So, anyway LB, Welcome to the forum, and sorry for all the flak you got over your name. I can't really blame you for being at least somewhat upset about what happened on that first thread, but I suggest you chalk that one up to "learning experience", grab a cold one, chill out, and get back to talking about trains.

Why is it that those who tout themselves as "broad-minded" and "tolerant" in their views always seem to rant and rave and be so "narrow-minded" and "intolerant" of those who hold opposing views to them?

I don't particularly care one way or another what Lord_Beelzebub's screen name is. However, this website is owned by Kalmbach Publishing and they get to set the rules whether you or I or anybody else likes it or not. It's their house and they get to decide what goes on inside it.

Jumping to conclusions, I think not. I have been here for almost a year, I read nearly every thread daily. My statements are based on posts made over a period of time by numerous forumers, but primarily in the now deleted thread... I particularly broke up over the "Jesus is our leader who died for us" sentiment that assumes we all believe in basic Christian ethos. It may come as a shock to many of you, but we all dont live in the US, subscribe to your world position or even want your input politically, socially or religiously into our lives.

This is a model train forum, not a rahrah US+Christianity promotional tool. Keep it in your pants where it belongs.

Where has Kalmbach posted anything to do with religion/anti-religion or any other restriction on their forum user names? It is assumed, of course, that you cant post profanity. His name is, at best , ill-considered for this forum, but how can he know that without reading between the lines as you have expected him to do? You register and post your first post asking for some advice and the first ten reponses are inflammatory because of your perfectly acceptable elsewhere username?

My response was not a jumping to conclusion at all. If you had read the now deleted thread you would have found the fundamentalist crap that has no place in these forums. I dont give a toss whether you are a left-wing *** satanist or pastor of the local church, your religious beliefs/prejudices have not place here. This is trains and train related topics. If not you take your chances.

If not for the inflammatory reaction of several forumers to his first post, he wouldn't have had to respond in any manner. You guys are making many people very unwelcome on these forums with your confrontational style. I am more than happy to return serve, I love confrontation, but you guys seem to be thriving on it, making ahuge issue where there needed to be none and then whining when someone takes a contrary view to yours. The arrogance of the replies to new forumers has got to be a major issue, some people have taken an ownership of these forums that well exceeds the norm.

If you want to fight, flame and generally carry on over someone's user name, feel free, but expect them to return serve. It seems slightly arrogant to give them a hard time then assume that because you think you are right that you can then act indignantly when he responds.

This is not the first, nor will I expect it to be, the last time someone takes the high ground after starting the issue in the first place.

BTW LB, I play Age series games, and do so despite the fact that I also am building a layout. GL HF

Grubby, you are overheated buddy, calm down. Most of us know and believe that religeon and politics have no right being on this forum. That is written right in the forum by-laws, so lets put that one to bed right now. Do some people dis-obey this rule? Of course they do. But what we are talking about here is a proper username. Grubby, you yourself stated to keep this forum aimed at Model Railroading, did you not? If so, then what we are telling this young lad is "consider" other names.

Hoy Vey!

This is ridiculous...when I first came to this forum many moons ago I was going to register as Beeblebrox as in Zaphod Beeblebrox, ex-confidence-trickster and part time Galactic President from my favorite novel -The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but I was concerned that some religiousy person wouldn't get the reference and get all doubled over in a panty-twist thinking aBeeblebrox was something else[}:)]....guess I wasn't too far off. [;)]

Oh Well, its just screen name to me. I've seen far more clever and far more stupider ones here and there, so I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist..

I will suggest to you Lord B a small compremise that will statisfy most while irritating the heck out of an even smaller group...

may I suggest Beelzebubba dark lord of the hillbillies[}:)][:I][:o)][:0][:p][:D]

When you choose a username, as mentioned earlier, you are making a statement about yourself whether you believe that or not, it is true. Look at my username for instance, I happen to love nature, I photograph the outdoor scenes quite often, and I love the wild animals. So I chose Grayfox because "I" am gray haired, and I like foxes in the wild ( besides, my wife thinks I'm "foxy " too )

Now you chose Beelzebub. (SP)...this is the name given to the devil in the bible. Personally, you don't offend "me", but you "are" offending yourself because many if not all of us forum members are wondering, "what would make a person want to idolize Satan? What kind of person "is" this?

As Joe pointed out, there are so many other names that you could choose, especially those that deal in someway with trains or railroading. Please don't idolize the prince of evil, that is degrading, immature and foolish on your part son.

I agree. You have to pick your battles and trying to make keeping a forum name that bothers some people isn't worth the lack of respect and subtle antagonism it garners. If you truly believe forum name doesn't matter, then what's the problem with changing it out of courtesy to people who may be bothered by it, petty as their viewpoint might seem to you?

Choose a name you like, I don't care if it's the one you have. If someone doesn't want to help you because of it that's their problem and they should keep it to themselves.

Their have gotten to be so many sour grapes on this forum lately, people have to remember that if they don't like a poll, subject, or the person posting, just pass it by and don't read it.

Personally, I don't care about the name in the least, and think it's overblown. I also think enough people ARE bothered by it that the courteous and commonsensical thing might have been to change it instead of trying to make it some matter of principle.

Treating the name as a non-issue, I think there's some big ???'s about his behavior here, specifically that he has chosen to pass up every olive branch offered and instead continue to spit insults and venom.

Having said that, I'm willing to drop it and just see how he does in his other thread/other threads he joins. But I think he's put himself in a "two strikes" position and ought to tread very lightly for a while.

Lord_B is a registered user on BF2 and nicks like this are so common amongst younger players... my nick is also a variation of my gaming nick, I see way more offensive combinations of letters online everyday without wetting myself. There are other uses for computers besides moaning about someone's name on a train forum after all.

It is fine if you want to hold tightly to your ultra conservative religious views of the world, but to do so at the expense of a young forumer who quite innocently registers here to ask some questions about MRing, without the preconceived idea that his nick is "offensive" or "controversial" is somewhat hypocritical. You presume he did it to be controversial, you would be presuming wrong IMO, he clearly has no idea of what you are all talking about, to him LB is a line from a Queen song or some other pop culture reference.

The first thread made mention of all kinds of religious overtones to his name, whilst they may well be accurate in your small view of the world, there is another whole side of life that has no regard for your POV, doesn't understand it and therefore doesn't even comprehend the wider implications of such a user name. My religious beliefs are irrelevant to this discussion BTW, I know what the name is, but that is also irrelevant.

Maybe if you weren't ultra conservative Americans with the thinnest skin I have ever seen you would have been prepared to accept his explanantion and move on, but now you are implying he is a smurf of one of our more infamous forumers... get a life you old farts, comprehend something outside your own bifocal vision. Stop looking for a fight every time someone who doesn't live in the buckle of the bible belt drops by.

You must be very fit physically.

You certainly jump to a lot of conclusions.

I don't particularly care one way or another what Lord_Beelzebub's screen name is. However, this website is owned by Kalmbach Publishing and they get to set the rules whether you or I or anybody else likes it or not. It's their house and they get to decide what goes on inside it.

Get over it.

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.
