CF7/F7 conversion

would it be possible to mount a CF7 body shell over an F7 frame and running gear?
i have an HO athearn F7, and in theroie all i need to do is find a cf7 body and i have a CF7, right? (not unlike how the real railroad did it[:)])

gearhead there have been numerous articles on ktbashing/scratchbuilding CF7s. if you do a search on the index of magazines those might help you out. also either carsten publications or hundman publications produced a book on the CF7 which lists all the modelling articles on the CF7.

i have it but will have too look for it. also these articles were in the many different model railroading magazines.

Athearn makes (or used to) make a CF7, they used a Railpower CF7 shell when they bought out the firm. I used a Railpower shell on an Athearn F7 chassis many years ago. "CF7" means "Converted F7", and were F7's kitbashed by Santa Fe.

Rail Power Products CF7 shell was made to fit over the Athearn F7A frame and drive. Don't know how available those shells are now that RPP was bought out by Athearn a couple of years ago. If you could get one the Athearn R-T-R CF7s are sweet, but light pullers.

actually bob in the book it says that the "C" stood for Cleburne where they were built which is south of Dallas tx .

ill have to re read that book to be sure on it though

i don't see why you couldn't might be a slight problem but you can make any thing work in this hobby i found out.

You can find the shells at shows, and I just bougt one on ebay this past weekend. I am hoping that I do not have to do much modifying of the F7 frame to make it work.

You can mount a RPP CF7 shell on an Athearn F7 chassis with some modifcations. The main one is that you have to take .100" from the top of the Athearn chassis.
I am posting a scan of the CF7 instruction sheet and a photo showing the height difference between the RPP chassis and the Athearn chassis.

I've got one of the athearn CF-7's, really not bad, pulling power is proto. Pulls 8 cars up a 4% grade on my layout. 16 on the flat with no problem. doesn't look bad either.

Technically, yes. If it's all prototypical that's the way to do it. RailPower makes the shell you're looking for, and I believe they are made to fit Athearn running gears. I'm not sure though, so you might want to research it a little before you buy it.
