The tunnels were 'recycled' to route electrical and communication cables. Then there was a major leak that opened them to (I think) the Chicago River, and a major mess and cleanup.

Sorry Guys, but its ....60!

The Chicago Tunnel Company Railroad. This was an amazing little RR, electric motor units used the labrynth of tunnels to deliver coal, produce, and just about everything else to businesses under downtown Chicago. This was built to avoid the problem of delivery trucks clogging up the streets but it was never a proftable operation, but amazingly most of it is still intact, and yes as noted above, it was one of these tunnels that was penetrated by an auger drill flooding basements thruout the central downtown.

I'll post addition info after the poll closes...

PS. Teaser note here....you can actually SEE a little part of the system in the movie, 'The Blues Brothers' its the scene were Jake and Elwood are confronted by gun toating Carrie Fisher, that was shot in one of the more accessable tunnels.[:D]
