I've recently found myself back into model railraoding after about a 7 year absence. I'm looking to build some simple kits, one including Athearn dummy engines. However, all the shops I've visited around Portland don't seem to carry any. So, did Athearn discontinue dummy locomotives, or is it my bad luck??

Thanks.

Kinda Sorta. Horizon went on a buying spree and bought up both Athearn and MDC Roundhouse. The short story is that they plan models, but rally haven't sorted it all out.

Train Shows are your best bet.

Oh yeah, Welcome.

Welcome as well!

You have some good hobby shops in Portland, so your failure to find any on the shelves is a good indicator of some of the changes that have happened in the MRR hobby during your hiatus. There has been a real trend towards ready to run models, both for rolling stock and loco's. The selection of kits is drastically reduced in most hobby shops. Can any of the local stores order these for you?

Welcome, chucker! I would have to agree with Chip...train swap meets or GAT shows may be your best bet. Find a modeler's table with the cardboard "parts" box labled $.25 each and you may find what you are looking for. Some companies are coming out with dummy engines, but the prices!! Seems to be a lot for some with no power.

I deal alot with portland supplies. You have to be picky on what you want. The best thing is swap meets, train show, and ebay. Portland has kits at least 5 different hobby shops that I know of have them.

Welcome Chuck.

Chip is right. I cross all kinds of Athearn dummies at shows.
