my favorite is EMD since it was (still is?) owned by General Motors- ALCO is a close second- i like the PA's, FA's but i DON'T like the Century series. I like the newer GE's too (DASH 8, DASH 9 , AC4400, ect)

Of course EMD is still around. They're my favorite. They made the mighty SD80MACs, the curious SD50s, and the uniqe FP45s. All my favorites.

He wasn't questioning whether EMD is still around. Just whether they are still owned by General Motors. They are not. The name has changed also, but still goes by the initials "EMD" (can't remember what it changed to at the moment).[:D] Wait, I think it's Electro Motive DIESEL, instead of DIVISION.

That's because the sale of EMD was a recent development[:D]:

Yep, and it hits you hard when you realize that the company who revolutionized the locomotive business is no longer building locomotives, having sold off that division..
As for who I like best, take a guess!!

EMD is now Electro Motive Diesel and not owned by GM.. It used to be Electro Motive Division, which was a division of General Motors.

Why do you think BNSF has ordered some new SD70Ace's???

[(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D] Don't forget GE makes TV sets, ovens, and everything else that's in your kitchen.

Because BNSF doesn't know how to manage their money. They already have over 5,500 engines. Many are in storage. -Illinois Central was conservative, especially during the 1990's.

Let me put my feeling for GE this way - They should have stuck to making toasters instead of putting wheels on them.
Have you heard the GEVOs? I mean the AC4400 sounds a bit wonky, but this sounds like an AC4400 that has had deffered maintainance for 25 years!

I still like (to a certain degree) modern GE- DASH 8-40C, AC4400 are my favorites. The non-widecabs in the DASH 8 look much better than the widecab version (DASH 8-40CW) But I also love the old ALCO FA's an PA's

Fairbanks-Morse is still around, not making locomotives though.

And as an aside, F-M now handles Alco diesel engines! GE sold the 251 design to F-M. Alco engines are still popular in marine and stationary applications.

I will admit it. I'm an ALCO-holic. EMD runs a fairly close second though.

Gotta be EMD with all those unique 1st and 2nd generation diesels, especially that NW5 and the immortal GP9.

I believe that Jhhtrainsplanes has a naval F-M engine in his signature, just to show thatwhile the locomotive business didn't go well, the business they started in is stil going strong!
