n scale bridge clearance from one foam level to next

Hello, I am building my first N scale layout, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what height clearance would be from the top of the foam on the upper level to the top of the foam on the lower level to allow for proper clearance of trains passing under a bridge on the upper level. Without it looking out of place, IE to high or to low. It will have earthen embankments on the sides. I am planning on using a plate girder type bridge. I will probably have it ballasted. Any information would be greatfully appreciated, Thanks Mike

Should be high enough that your tallest rolling stock will roll under it without hitting. This can be determined by the the old unscientific method of laying a section of track on road bed to be used, place the tallest piece of rolling stock on the track and measure. Add about a 1/4" to that and it should be pretty close.

Also, if you have any N scale track plan books, they should give you the required hieght also. Ken

NMRA says 1 7/8 inces from the railtops but most people round to 2 inches.
