I ordered from my LHS a Virginian Caboose, and it is real sweet.
From Atlas, brand new, and surprised they offered it.
I will be seriously doing the Virginian.

I progressed to remove the caboose from the package, and it is really safety packaged. There are softy tabs taped on the underside of the plastic shape its stored in...weird thing that is.

There is a shaped plastic clear cover over the car, and that is reeeaaally taped down. Finding the ends of the tape was fun.

I finally got the car out and it looks realy good and has the Kadee style couplers
already mounted. I place it on my test train along with my South Shore Caboose
and test ran it behind my Little Joe.

Cool.

Now I look at the package and theres this hole in the corner with some plastic something or other..

I fiddle around and remove it and its a plastic bag with...

Horn Hook Couplers

Odd, yes, I have discovered this too. I keep them in a small box. Not sure why? [8)]

dinwitty,

Saw one at the LHS last weekend. They look very nice. Wi***hey'd make an NYC or Erie caboose sometime.

So, how soon will you be converting the rest of your fleet to horn-hooks?

I've still got some horn-hook uncoupler ramps if you're interested.

Can anyone tell me why I keep old hook-horn couplers when I replace them with Kadees? I know I'll never use them again. Is this just another manifestation of the modelers pack rat tendendies? I guess that eventually they could make their way into a scrap load for a gondola or fill for a junkyard.

Odd as it may sound they are modelers still using the X2F.The X2F still works as well as it did years ago if they are properly mounted..Now why some modelers still use 'em is another question..

dinwitty,
Re packaging: the joy of kit building has been replaced by the [censored] joy of getting to your RTR purchase. Personally think this may be manufacturer's way of training future kit builders: "If you're creative enough to open our packaging you're creative enough to build a kit. Step over here, in aisle 6 we have kits that will challenge your new found capabilities."[:D]

My stepson has horn & hook couplers while I do not. When he gets Atlas cars I swap out the couplers (or the trucks) and save them for my model railroad. He is happy, I'm happy.

I toss the horn hook couplers along with the plastic knuckle couplers that come with new models.

all they are good for is the trash can..in fact the couplers that are mounted to the car or loco are also good for the trash can...mine come off A.S.A.P. and replaced with a nice shiny new pair of Kadee's...chuck

Just to let you know how good my Hobby Shop is...

They sell horn hooks, but not Kadees.

I don't bother with the x2f or Rapido (N scale) couplers. They're the first thing to go into the trash can. Why? Well, the rest of my roster is nearly all Kadee or M-T. (I do both N and HO scale.)

Yes and I've never known them to work too well. Have been installing KDs for over 40 years now. I'm starting to toss the McHenrys and Accumates for the Real Thing! My 5 year old son is saying "hate" a lot these days (a practice we're trying to curb), and he saw some hook couplers the other day and said: "Papa, you hate those!"

Well I can't say I love 'em!

I thought it was just as funny, when I found the bag with the rapido couplers that came with my N GP9.

Beats the way Micro Trains does things. They put the pizza cutters on the cars, and give you the low profile wheels seperate. I hate having to swap wheels, on a brand new car.

Ok, now why are people buying them on ebay then! I just sold a large lot of a 100 of them 2 weeks ago for $7.00. Some one had brand new packages of them on ebay and was getting $4.00 for a package of 6. There must be quite a few people out there still using them. I just stock up on the older horn hooks and sell them off. Not getting rich, but its an easy way to get rid of them and make a few $$$. I love the Kadees on all my engines and cars now for some time, much better couplers than the cheaper plastic knuckle couplers that are made.

I have been having trouble getting my wrecking crew busy, they idle in the yard playing craps.

My kadees work too well, I like to run my fully working Crane car, it can re-rail a BigBoy. Very realistic.
I had some HornHooks on some cars and over one bad section of track the cars would always derail or de-couple. I brought out my crane and saved the day.
Kadees eliminated that problem so I had nothing to do with my crane.
I have some pretty sharp curves and Horn Hools always derailed on them, but out came my crane car and back on they went!.

Kadees fix too many problems, I want my Horns back...[:(!]

Who wants a train to run perfectly anyways...? :sarcasm:

I have a mix of horn-hook and knuckle couplers. I found that if you clip the "horn" off the horn-hooks, they'll couple to Kadee #5s and other over sized knuckle couplers.[:D] I keep all my couplers that aren't in use incase I need to have a spare ready sometime.[:D]

I keep them for repairing other people's old equipment. I am amazed at the number of neigborhood children that show up on my door step with a broken something or the other. Most of the time it is a coupler.
