They are on the wall about 6 inches from the ceiling.

I think they were 7 or 8 years old, but they tested OK about 8 months ago. Guess they went bad in the mean time. And yes, there was more smoke then flame.

I went out today and bought another smoke detector. I'll have to wait till I get paid tomorrow to get more (both kinds) and a new extinguisher.

If you would like some more advice on the best places to mount them, how far from corners, etc. please email me (don't want to tie up the forum with fire prevention stuff!) I'll be more then happy to give you some free advice. If not, please read the directions on the detector carefully and actually measure distances, dont eyeball it.
