Testing DCC Sound online?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 25, 2005 5:05 PM
Just wondering if anyone besides BLI has sound bytes for their sound decoders. I'd love to at least know what I am in for before I plunk down several dollars on a sound card or locmotive.

BTW: I have no LHS (unless you count Hobbytown USA) to go test units out at.

They really don't sound anything like the sound bites when you get the real life thing.

True but, they at least give a general idea, right? I mean I want to know my Alco is going to sound like an Alco. Or my SD40-2 has the turbo whine. Or if my steamer has the right sound for an engine it's size. The important stuff, lol.

I can tell you the SD40-2 has a great turbo whine, because I have one and I love it. I would like to hear an Alco and a GE also befor I buy.

Soundtraxx used to have some very nice sounds online at their website, however, earlier this year rumors and reports were circulating on forums that certain modelers downloaded some of the sample sounds onto uploadable decoders so Soundtraxx pulled their samples off.

I did download a few and saved it on to my media player for my own listening pleasure. Since the sounds are already compressed, I doubt that they would have the fidelity that an actual Soundtraxx decoder has. Plus, the samples only feature a few seconds of sound. That's certainly not not much to download into an uploadable decoder.

To my way of thinking, it is bad for business to have sound bytes availble, because of sound bytes, I cancelled several orders. If you know it is incorrect, skip the model.

On the other hand, if the sound is really good, it should be available to hear before you buy.
