Do your wife understand the need for a BIG space?
Posted by electrolove on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 12:07 PM
This question may seem odd... I really need a big space for my dream layout. I would be very happy with 100 square meter. So I asked my wife, can we move to something bigger so I can build my dream layout. No no no is the only answer I get so it seems that I must use the space I have. Is this a common problem or is it just me?

This is very typical. What you need to do is tell her how much extra room she will have in a new house. And the extra garden space. Sometimes this works, usually not.

She gets the house; I get the basement.

Sometimes I get sleeping privileges.

We will be adding on, she gets a room for her wants and I get mine for the empire. =)

If we ever relocate, it will be to a bigger home.

Yes, she does. That is why we are converting the garage and the attic space above to a loft. She gets her room, I get mine. I get the garage.[;)]

This was a PreNup agreement. Saying that the jury is still out. However I believe the Judge/CFO has already made a ruling.[:(!]

My wife is the one who decides that we need more space for trains. Train layout is in a 16 foot X 20 foot room room and wife is planning to tunnel through two walls to other rooms. She says she needs more room for scenery.

Guess I'm lucky. We have to move and the wife keeps turning down houses. When I asked her why, she said that my train room wouldn't be big enough!

Yup,....I've got a keeper!

It helps when there are other reasons for moving. The size of my previous layout was limited by the fact that I had to allow space for my wife to bring the laundry through into the utility room in the basement. We purchased a rancher with no basement but the garage is fully detached with no laundry facilities. We never considered any house that did not have a garage.

My approach is to leave as much MR stuff sprawled all over the basement so she knows that I am in need of a lot of room. We have decided to fini***he basement, and I told her that I would move my layout to the loft in our "barn"-like garage further down the property. She immediately replied that she likes my layout and likes to know that I am nearby running trains. Soooooo...[:-^]...waiting for the other shoe to drop...I replied that the contractor will not be able to work around what I have (8'X11' slab), and that I would like to redo the layout to fix mistakes. She gave me a wry grin which was as good as, "Whatever it takes."

YYYEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! (step-dancing).

i gess this sorta applies to this....
im really constricted for space.
my mom wont let me add an 8 inch wide shelf around 2 walls of the living room to extend my 4x8 wich is already shoved back into a corner.
the shelf would run behind the couch, and end in about a 4x4 table in a corner that has nothing in it. in all it would give me almost a scale mile of mainline (i guess) and be an improvement overall.
the answer is a confidence-crushing NO NO NO-NO-NO. [:(!][B)][:(][banghead][censored]

I'm pretty lucky, all kids have moved on and I get the smallest spare bedroom, she gets all the closets and floor space. She only said I could have the room, nothing said about storage or floors. Sooner or later I'll envade.

My second wife said no hobbies. I said I needed hobbies to stay sane. After 2 yrs I almost lost my sanity so I lost the wife. Now I have the whole house again. I now have an 11x14 ft room for trains and one other bedroom I could add but I would have to run a clear plexyglass tube through the bathroom that is in between the two. My close friends say I'm nuts if I do it. I told them my 2nd wife made me this way. My first wife would have gladly let me have a room for trains if she had lived. SOOO, guys, if you have an understanding wife give her anything she wants to make her happy she puts up with your hobby needs.

SINCE A 4X8 takes up whole room to get around it (doorway's are 3' wide) you end up with a 4X8 - taking up 10'X12'. BETTER to build a 10X12 with 4X8 in the center.

Most bedroom's are 12X12. 60 years ago they were 10X10.

Most wive's - when given the choice - would rather have their husband's HOME at night.

Electrolove,

My wife located the house that we live in, looking for a basement, and a railroad near by. The CSX, old Pere Marquette, runs across the back of our property. [8D][8D][8D]

The "train room" is 26 x 19 feet. The workshop is about 14 x 20 feet. [^][^][^]

Basically, the house, the yard, and the shed are her's, the basement and garage are mine. [:p][:p][:p]

In my estimation, she is a "keeper". [:D][:D][:D]

I guess Im one of the lucky ones. I have a room for my trails and my wife has a craft room. So I dont have to war over space. I do think that as time goes on you will alway WANT more room but will you really need it is the question.

I mean lets face it if most of us could get away with it we would have trains running in every room. As far as a dream layout I would need to build a 60X60 barn with a bathroom, heat,a/c, and the whole nine yards...

Right now Im happy with what I got and it will take years to need more space
Catch Ya later, Cary

Yup, that is why we are looking at things like this for our next house:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4398751418&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
I get the gymnasium for the train layout, a classroom for exhibits, a classroom for a workshop, and a classroom for storage.
