Check out this really cool layout on eBay!
Posted by stokesda on Thursday, November 17, 2005 10:09 PM
I was surfing through eBay looking for train stuff, when I stumbled upon this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-Train-Set-Table-Living-Room-Family-Room_W0QQitemZ4417699525QQcategoryZ12515QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

No way I can afford it, but I thought it was so cool I just had to share it with you guys. From the size and everything, it looks like it's N-scale? (I model HO, so I don't have a good feel for how big an N layout is)

Maybe if I win the lottery between now and Saturday afternoon, I'll bid on it! [:p]

This guy must be quite the woodworker. The table itself looks to be a fantastic job. I don't think he'll find a seller, however.

Isn't $18,000 a little steep?

And what does it cost to fly from Hawaii and stay in a motel for 2-3 days?

That is a very interesting, well made layout. I like it a lot..he/she has accomplished a great deal in that small space. I would pay between $3-4K for that, but no more...assuming I had the dough.

I agree with most of you guys. It is nice, but for me it is not $18,000 worth of nice. I think for 18K I could build something I would be far happier with. Probably I could build something I liked better for less than half of that.

I definately could build something I liked better at a fraction of the price. If I could afford to drop 18K on trains all at once, I'd check with Dunam Studios or some pro and see what they could come up with.

He'll sell it to some Internet millionaire who got out before the bubble burst. Unfortunately, the only kind of person who will pay this much for a layout is someone who really won't appreciate it.

It takes 2 adults to open the top. I suppose that means you have to call a friend over to fix a derailment. (Oh, silly me! The servants can do that!)

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

This is pretty crazy.

I know I've seen plans available for a similar, if not identical, setup and you could have a local carpenter build it for you for a few hundred bucks if you didn't have the skills to do it. Then a few hundred more for the railroad stuff, plus the pleasure of doing it...

Just doesn't make sense.

WOW! Thats allot of coin! I do allot of woodworking and cabinet building, He used what looks like Tiger Maple, which is hard to find! It is a really nice peice of work the whole thing! It might be caught up in a estate and a freind is trying to sell it for a family member. I bought a very old HO layout, it was 16ft by 10ft on a auction a couple of years ago, also got all the extras, engines, cars, buildings, parts........ you name it! The extras was over a full size pickup load, I paid $750 for the whole thing, there were over 150 engines alone, that were Athearn &Atlas! I spent most of all of 4 weeks sorting, and sold most of it in large potions through a freind who goes to allot of train shows, and swap meets!

$18k Thats what I paid for my new kitchen addition, and I made my own cabinets!

I gotta be honest, when I read the thread before clicking the link, I was expecting a _WHOLE_ lot more to it - even with the observations about the price being high. When I did click the link, I was shocked. It's a very nice little layout, but I gotta agree - $18K is WWWWAAAAAY over the top.

I did a couple of quick checks on internet sites and it would appear that $2,500 - $3,000 MIGHT be a more appropriate price w/o shipping.

But hey, if he does get 18 K, I might retire and go into new line of business. [:D]

When I found this, I didn't give much thought to the price other than to think to myself, "Too much for me." It is way over the top, though. If some of you are right, and you can build something like that for $5K or less, it makes me think he didn't make it himself, and paid a pretty hefty price for it in the first place. Heck, if it only costs a few thousand, I just might make one myself someday! [:)]

I wonder how much of the $18K is wrapped up in the seller personally flying to the buyer's house and staying a few days? I guess he wants to fly first class and stay at the Hilton or something? Maybe he's also including a hourly labor fee, too?

Looks really cool. But 18,000 is a little outta my price range. But it is not a bad price like ereimer said.

I think ereimer is right. For that kind of $$ I would rather put a layout in throughout the entire basement.

Note the downtown buildings. Looks like they are right "out of the box". I don't think a mega-bucks person would pay more than $8,000.

in the sixth picture down, there appear to be two disembodied human feet leaning against the table. Also, if the seller is going to be staying 2-3 days, I hope he plans on a hotel room instead of shacking up with the customer. [:D]

At $18,000 he could at least include shipping[:0][xx(].For that kind of money, I could buy a car,and then build a killer HO layout besides.
