Trestle bent dimentions
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 4, 2005 11:50 AM
Hi everyone. I'm planning a trestle and need some help. Somewhere, in the past, I found a diagram of the dimentional sizes and lengths of the timbers for a standard guage trestle. I have no clue where!! Can anyone guide me to this information?

I build my bents starting at 2 1/2"...HO?....HO track is roughly 2 1/4" wide from one end of the tie to the other so my bents are only 1/4" wider than the track..it also depends on what type of bridge i'm building ... www.kalmbach.com has a book titled "Bridges and Trestles" that you may want to order ..it has just about every type of railroad bridge ever made in it and has dimentions and material lists included for building each type of bridge ... I highly recommend this book...chuck

Try www.blackbearcc.com . The company has templates you can print out and sells jigs for making trestles in all the popular scales. If you print out the template, you can go to your hobby shop and match up the template with the correct size wood (the templates are scaled very well so you don't have to worry about them being out of scale). Most of the templates are in N Scale though, (my scale, so it helps [:D]) so you'll have to enlarge them on a photocopier. Also, it is cheaper just to use the template to build the bridge than getting one of the Black Bear jigs. However, if you are building a long bridge or a lot of bridges, the jig makes for much faster work.[:)]

Thanks. I checked out Blackbear, spent 20 minures looking over the site. Never found any printable drawings or dimentions though. Just skewed angle drawings. Interesting pages though.

Yes, Electrolove, those diagrams were VERY helpful! The dimentional data will help me choose timber sizes and the spacong data will help me design a jig!

Thank you!!

Glad to hear that I could help a model train friend. Don't forget that you can build your bridge with styrene instead of wood. I think you will be more pleased with the result if you do. But you can build it with wood as well. Paint the individual pieces before assembling the bridge with CA. Just a suggestion.
